Black Poetry Day honors not only the works of African-American poets, but also Black heritage and literacy in general. Amanda Gorman was named the first National Youth Poet Laureate in 2017 and is well-known for her 2021 inaugural poem "The Hill We Climb," which calls for unity, collaboration, and togetherness among Americans. "The Hill We Climb" was removed from the elementary section of the Bob Graham Education Center's library earlier this year after a parent complained that the text contained "indirect hate messages," gender ideology, and indoctrination. Ideas are extremely powerful. That is why the First Amendment protects intellectual freedom — and why governments sometimes try to suppress it. Classrooms are places for exploration–not discrimination. This week, students across Florida will return to school, and it’s their right to learn about the full breadth of American history while feeling safe and welcomed. We all must fight to oppose any effort that criminalizes or censors books and education about race, gender, or sexual orientation and supports students, educators, and everyone's fundamental right to learn. Take our pledge to defend every student’s right to learn, and we’ll share our Right to Learn toolkit. https://lnkd.in/exbP2RPX
