Black Poetry Day honors not only the works of African-American poets, but also Black heritage and literacy in general. Amanda Gorman was named the first National Youth Poet Laureate in 2017 and is well-known for her 2021 inaugural poem "The Hill We Climb," which calls for unity, collaboration, and togetherness among Americans. "The Hill We Climb" was removed from the elementary section of the Bob Graham Education Center's library earlier this year after a parent complained that the text contained "indirect hate messages," gender ideology, and indoctrination. Ideas are extremely powerful. That is why the First Amendment protects intellectual freedom — and why governments sometimes try to suppress it.
