I've started to learn about development and the model organisms in my 'Genes and Molecules 2' module at the University of Glasgow. One such model organism highlighted in the lectures is zebrafish - reposting this video as it's a really good explanation on why zebrafish are used for development studies!

New paper published in PNAS! https://lnkd.in/eBSx_htu Delighted to see this make it over the line, more than 10 years (!) since I was allowed into a cell biology lab. An exciting demonstration of the power of interdisciplinary research. TL;DR: We outline a simple yet powerful theoretical framework that links the output of classic pulse-chase experiments to the underlying distribution of protein half-lives. Through application of Bayesian data fitting techniques based on the maximum entropy principle, we successfully apply this framework to infer protein half-life distributions for several cell types in a variety of states. We thus demonstrate a strong overall skew towards long-lived proteins, and we explore the impact on protein turnover of different physiological states and interventions. https://lnkd.in/gbg4ZYKq I feel very honored that this paper on masticatory function could be published in the 'Food Oral Processing' special issue, co-hosted by Dr. Pereira and Dr. van der Bilt, in Archives of Oral Biology. In this paper titled 'Age-related difference in oral adaptation to masticatory perturbation,' we aim to discuss a question in dental practice: how patients adapt to challenges during chewing, such as foods difficult to eat. Chewing and swallowing are linked to diet - and it's exciting that this paper is included in the special issue of Food Oral Processing. It would be great to see more crosstalk between oral neuroscience and food science in the future!
