The world is in such disarray and our students need hope for peace. In this article we discuss some ways to support peace education in schools.

This month we remember young people who fought for access to better, access for all and access that improves outcomes for all. It was actually not their responsibility because truly children and youth should be dreaming and strategising on careers and school, but apartheid turned children into freedom fighters and young people into experienced political ideologues who were prepared to die for freedom. Young people then and young people now are impatient with the pace of progress, with the pace of redress, with archaic thinking that helps keep the status quo going. Young people were on the street in 1976. Young people were on the street in July 2021. Those of us who have made it to certain honour boards, where our names are mentioned with ease, in various spaces in our lives must hold the door open for others. Those of us who know of how the youth of 76 (our parents) were denied their names on honour boards, and achievements, and dignity and humanity - must keep the door open. We're not just here to put the name on the board, but to ensure that we become better as a society and that we do our bit as a bank to keep the door open so others can put their name on our honours board as wealth clients where previous family members only knew debt. We must help everyone see money differently so that they csn be on our honours board as home owners, where previous generations were denied this right. We must provide for dreams to come true and vehicles to be obtained, businesses to be supported so the young people of today can have their names on the honours boards of their community - without having to die for it first. #WeAreNedbank #ClassOf76

I am looking forward to speaking with students and faculty at CU's Spring Conference tomorrow. The topic is Pedagogy of a Peacebuilder. There is a registration link below. Here is the working description: Although, it is safe to assume that most people, when asked, would declare that peace is a value that they hold dear, there are very few people who have actually had any peace education. And yet, we are indirectly taught ideas about peace that directly impact the way we encounter those with whom we disagree.
