Self-diagnosing through social media is increasingly popular. While social media can be helpful as a source of community, diagnosis of any medical condition should be left to trained professionals. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to emphasize the importance of professional mental health care and formal clinical assessments. If you are concerned about your mental health, always seek guidance from a skilled expert instead of relying on social media for a diagnosis. May is mental health awareness month, and this clip from Pearson highlights one of the most important things that I think that folks should know about mental health or health in general - DON'T believe everything you see, read, or hear on social media! It is easy to be influenced by misinformation about mental health conditions, as it is often presented as very convincing and captivating. As this video states "self-diagnosing can lead to incorrect conclusions, unnecessary anxiety, and prevent identification and treatment of underlying conditions." Seek support from a trusted, well-trained health professional who is regulated by a professional college that ensures its members are prepared to serve the public. In Alberta, please remember that the Mental Health Helpline can be accessed province-wide, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. 1-877-303-2642 #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness
