Signed into law on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities—both visible and non-visible—such as requiring employers to provide accommodations for individuals with disabilities and ensuring that buildings and public transportation are accessible. July is Disability Pride Month, a time to honor diverse experiences and promote the rights, independence, and visibility of individuals with disabilities. Disability Pride means embracing one's full identity, including disabilities, and it holds different meanings for everyone. The spectrum of disability is intersectional and diverse, and we celebrate and recognize this in our work with clients both in therapy and beyond. Many people with disabilities experience ableism—behaviors, practices, norms, laws, and institutions that assume people with disabilities are inherently less capable and valuable. The world wasn’t built with people with disabilities in mind, and because of that, the world we live in is inherently ableist. Ableism is the discrimination against people with disabilities based on the belief that typical abilities are superior. One way to take an active part in normalizing disabilities is committing to being a disability ally and learning to recognize ableism when you see it and how to take actions to call it out. Disability is multifaceted, with many people living with invisible disabilities that we might not recognise at first glance.We must open our eyes and broaden our understanding, viewing disability holistically. When we challenge our assumptions and work towards inclusivity, we make the world a better place for everyone.
