🌍✨ Refugee and migrants in Europe often face significant challenges when it comes to their mental well-being. Studies have shown that older refugees may experience depression, while younger male refugees commonly struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. These difficulties can be traced back to the traumatic events they have witnessed in their home countries and during their journey. Accessing appropriate care is not always easy for refugees and immigrants due to structural issues. Additionally, research has revealed that the length of time spent in detention centers can have a negative impact on their mental health. 📚🌱 Further research has also highlighted a range of mental health issues within the refugee community as a whole. These include post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, psychosis, paranoia, and self-harm. The feeling of isolation and loneliness is prevalent among refugees, underscoring the urgent need to better understand and address their mental health concerns. ☑️🤝 During my time in Italy in 2017 and 2018, I had the privilege of witnessing the resilience of refugee youth who were facing mental health challenges. A social worker from the University of Perugia contacted me and asked for my assistance in supporting these incredible individuals. Despite facing obstacles such as a shortage of resources, a lack of culturally tailored services, and language and cultural barriers, their determination and strength left an indelible mark on me. 🤔🌱 I am aware that mental health services for refugees and immigrants vary across European countries, as do resources and capacities to support those in need. However, I am keen to learn about the efforts your country is making to tackle these issues. I am also interested in how we can contribute to advocating for improved mental healthcare for refugees and immigrants. Additionally, I would appreciate insights into the obstacles that exist in accessing appropriate mental healthcare and how we can overcome them. The recent Supreme Court ruling regarding affirmative action has raised concerns about its negative effects on diversity and efforts for achieving health equity. This ruling undermines the significant progress we have made in establishing inclusive environments and equal opportunities for every individual. By posing a threat to these crucial diversity initiatives, the ruling not only damages the progress made thus far but also presents a significant setback for promoting health equity. Extensive research consistently demonstrates the importance of diverse healthcare providers in narrowing the gaps in healthcare disparities. Therefore, any weakening of affirmative action puts at risk the advancements being made in addressing health inequities and further marginalizes underrepresented communities. This ruling has the potential to hinder our efforts in creating a more inclusive society and impede the strides taken towards achieving health equity.

It's fascinating to think about how she believes the first sign of civilization in a culture is not related to tangible objects, but rather the compassion and care shown towards others. The image of a broken femur that has healed serves as a symbol of the support and assistance provided to someone who has fallen. Mead's words remind us that true civilization and our own personal growth occur when we selflessly serve and help others in their time of need. It's a lovely reminder to always strive to be at our best by extending a helping hand to those around us. “Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones. But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal. A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. June marks PTSD Awareness Month, and it's a time for reflection. Through the 20th century, trauma has been characterized in different ways by mental health professionals. It started as Combat Trauma Shell Shock during World War I, then evolved to Battle Fatigue during World War II, and Operational Exhaustion became prevalent after Korea. In the aftermath of the Vietnam War, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder gained recognition as a pervasive trauma disorder. The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly presented us with the most distressing collective traumatic event of our lifetime. Each one of us has been impacted by its pervasive reach, whether through the loss of a loved one, financial hardship, or social isolation. As we look ahead to facing the aftermath of this crisis, it's crucial that we comprehend the far-reaching effects on individuals and communities. This raises an important question: What did we learn about ourselves and our mental health needs during the COVID-19 pandemic? I strongly believe that accessibility to Electronic Medical Records for all healthcare providers creates not only cohesion and increased quality of care but also aids us in creating personal center and individualized care. A holistic approach and knowing a person's past medical issues are crucial to the outcome. Providing patients with access to their treatment plans electronically and in an easily accessible format, have helped patients to be more involved in their treatment and take informed decisions. They can access their information and recommendations anytime, anywhere and work towards achieving their treatment goals. We have seen a significant positive impact on the quality of care provided when patients are involved and invested in their own treatment plans. It helps to create a cohesive and collaborative approach to healthcare, with patients feeling more empowered and involved in their care. Access to Electronic Medical Records creates a more efficient healthcare system, with healthcare providers having all the necessary information needed to provide the best possible care. It also helps to avoid duplication of tests and treatments, reducing healthcare costs and ultimately leading to better health outcomes.
