As someone who has worked extensively with small businesses over the past 20 years in marketing and advertising, it is far more cost effective to put up a billboard, or hand out fliers than to try to impress people so much with your service that they tell everyone about you. The #1 problem small businesses have is NOT inventing a better mouse trap, but letting people know they sell mousetraps! Any advertising is better than no advertising and all too often, businesses that rely on "word of mouth" find they have the same small pool of loyal customers but can't seem to grow simply because no one knows they exist! Advertising is an investment - it should make you more than it costs you. If you are not earning more from your advertising than it is costing you, you are either advertising in the wrong places or your ads are not impactful!
