WOMEN'S WORK IN THE MINING Women are crucial players in the artisanal mining sector, involved in various stages, from panning to trading. Despite their active roles, they often face many barriers, especially in high-risk regions. Gender-blind approaches further amplify inequalities and often leave women's contributions unrecognized by existing laws. Women's inclusion in ASM projects and policies is paramount to ensure sustainable development. They are vital stakeholders in resource governance, deserving meaningful consideration.

Empowering women in Africa’s mining industry! Discover the thoughts of Carla Clamp of BDO South Africa as she examines the challenges holding women back in the continent’s mining industry and why it is imperative to identify and remove such barriers. “There is a whole lot of untapped potential in women that could be miners that is currently not being assessed or utilised. Given the opportunity, these women could make a huge difference in the industry and can join the ranks of the several women change-makers that have been in the industry.” A the upcoming Investing in African Mining Indaba conference Clamp advised attendees and participants to keep this vital topic in mind throughout each discussion in this year’s agenda: “It is imperative that we maintain the focus of removing the barriers that keep women from shining and reaching their highest potential in an industry that has been historically male-dominated.” Discover the full interview at: https://lnkd.in/eERHV9Hu #MiningIndaba #WomenInMining #WomenEmpowerment #AfricaMining #WomenInBusiness

Social Intelligence Specialist | MD of Women in Mining UK - ESG | Gender | Extractives | Renewable Energy | Climate | Innovation
So...let's talk about the title of this article. Forget the content for now. The title "Do we really need more women in the boardroom? A bottom-up approach may provide more benefit for women" is a narrative that we must stop perpetuating. It's both, it's all! By 2022, women held 17.6% of director positions within top-500 listed mining companies, up from 4.9% in 2012. [See data from White & Case LLP, ARCH Emerging Markets Partners Limited and Women In Mining UK (WIM UK): https://lnkd.in/euZ6CmpF] On the panel, it was stated that one of the problems with women in mining groups is that they do not focus on women at grassroots, entry level. However, it is the women in mining groups, particularly in the Global South, that are taking on deep rooted systemic challenges that women and communities face of gender-transformation on the ground. Context is key! I encourage mining companies to stop making it an either/or issue and to make it a mining issue. Let's stop questioning whether we need more women and address the disparities in numbers--in number of women; in number of new entrants; in number of diverse thinking. #womeninmining #wimuk https://lnkd.in/eRvUDMpk

Today, the Timmins Chamber and the CIM Porcupine Branch launched Women in Mining Timmins, an organization that will strive to empower, support, and advocate for women in the mining industry. Timmins’ MPP and Minister of Mines, George Pirie, pointed out that women make up just 14% of the mining industry workforce. There is an opportunity to grow that number and advocate for best policies and practices that support women in mining, including women who work in affiliated industries. “Being able to mentor each other and better the experience in mining for the next generation of women coming into the industry is invaluable. You are taking the opportunity to change the narrative and decide how the future will be written for mining.” ~ Mayor Michelle Boileau. Membership is open to women and allies who support inclusivity in mining. I recently had the incredible opportunity to attend the National Women in Mining Conference in Elko, NV and I must say, it was an experience that left a lasting impact on me. The conference brought together women from all corners of the mining industry, providing a platform for networking, learning, and empowerment. The atmosphere was charged with a sense of camaraderie and solidarity among the attendees, who all shared a common goal of advancing gender diversity and inclusion in the traditionally male-dominated field of mining. One of the highlights of the conference for me was the keynote speeches delivered by inspiring women leaders in the mining industry. Their stories of overcoming challenges, breaking barriers, and achieving success served as a source of motivation for all of us in attendance. I was particularly moved by the emphasis on supporting and uplifting one another, as well as the importance of mentorship and allyship in driving positive change. As I left the conference, I felt a renewed sense of determination and purpose. The conference had not only equipped me with new knowledge and skills but had also instilled in me a sense of confidence and empowerment to continue breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes in the mining industry. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of such a transformative event and look forward to applying the lessons learned and connections made to further drive positive change in the industry. The National Women in Mining Conference was not just a conference; it was a celebration of women's achievements, a platform for growth and empowerment, and a testament to the power of unity and solidarity in creating a more inclusive and diverse mining industry. #womeninmining #kinross #nevadawomeninmining #RoundMountainGoldCorp #Rmgc
