So here are some charities you might consider donating to and following here on LinkedIn: Women for Women International - helps women survivors of war rebuild their lives. Malala Fund - an international organisation advocating for girls' education. Bloody Good Period - a UK charity campaigning for menstrual equity and the rights of all people who bleed. Refuge - the largest domestic abuse organisation in the UK, empowering women to live without violence and fear. Girls Inc. - the longest-running girls' leadership program in the US, equipping girls to reach their full potential while advocating with and for them to end inequity and discrimination. 💡 An interesting article in the BBC today with North East Lincolnshire rated *the toughest place in the UK to be a girl* according to Plan International Research. 📖 The full report on the state of girl's rights in the UK in 2024 is far more interesting. What strikes me is how close the rating was between the 'best' (East Dunbartonshire) and the 'worst' - just 10% between them. What that tells me is how much work we have to do to pull together as a whole society to champion our girls across every corner of the UK, and to bring them to the heart of decision making. The full report also covers the additional challenges faced by girls of colour, those who are LGBTQ+ and those who are disabled. We've still got a long way to go to make sure all girls get access to the same opportunities, and that all girls live free from harm. ♀ I really like this opening quote by Plan International CEO Rose Caldwell. "Whilst girls and young women told us throughout our research that they find much joy in life, in their communities, and relationships, they also told us loud and clear that they aren’t experiencing the progress on gender equality that they’ve been promised. They are angry and frustrated with the state of equality and face huge pressure to meet the standards society expects of them. Girls and young women often don’t feel safe in public, they do not feel listened to by people in power, and they are frustrated at not being able to make their own choices in life. All these challenges are felt more keenly by girls from diverse communities, including girls of colour, LGBTQ+ girls, and disabled girls. Today is International Women’s Day, a day of celebrating the achievements and contributions of women, that has been observed for more than 100 years (since 1909 in the U.S.). It is a day when women are honored and women’s rights are promoted without regard to national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, or political divisions. We also recognize the enormous obstacles women face — from structural injustices, marginalization, and violence, to cascading crises that affect them first and worst, to the denial of their personal autonomy and rights over their bodies and lives. Gender-based discrimination harms everyone, and International Women’s Day is a call to action. Action to stand with women who are demanding their fundamental rights at great personal cost. Action to strengthen protection against sexual exploitation and abuse. And action to accelerate women’s full participation and leadership. But who will stand up for women when the day is over? ⚠️ In 2024, girls and women are still suffering from gender inequality: - They experience more gender-based violence (#GBV); - don't have equal access to #education; - are paid less and have more limited access to #leadership positions; - Are more vulnerable to the effects of the #climate crisis; - often take on a disproportionate share of #carework; - don't have equal access to #healthcare, especially in terms of sexual and reproductive health and - are underrepresented in #political positions and decision-making bodies. ‼️ The list goes on... ✊ You can make a change. Exciting Milestone for SAVING SOULS FOUNDATION I am excited to share that Saving Soul Foundation has successfully provided 5 sewing machines to deserving families who have the talent but lack the resources to kickstart their sewing ventures. Additionally, we support those in need through our food distribution program, providing essential items like sugar, flour, tea, and rice packages. Our mission is to empower women, promote gender equality, and support vulnerable communities through various initiatives. Our efforts align with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 🔹 SDG 1: No Poverty - By equipping women with sewing machines, we help them create a sustainable source of income. 🔹 SDG 2: Zero Hunger - Through our food distribution program, we ensure that basic nutritional needs are met for many families. 🔹 SDG 5: Gender Equality - We are committed to empowering women and promoting gender equality by providing the tools and training they need to succeed. Looking ahead, we are excited to announce our plans to offer comprehensive training programs. These programs will teach women how to effectively run their sewing businesses from home, further enabling them to achieve financial independence and contribute to their communities. However, we need your support to continue our mission. Many poor women are on our list waiting for sewing machines, but due to a shortage of funds, we have had to temporarily stop our distributions. The newest trend in philanthropy is gendered giving. Will your organisation follow in the footsteps of Melinda French Gates? Melinda French Gates has committed $1 billion in new spending over the next two years for people and organizations working on behalf of women and families around the world. "Only about 2 percent of charitable giving in the United States goes to organizations focused on women and girls. When we allow this cause to go so chronically underfunded, we all pay the cost. As shocking as it is to contemplate, my 1-year-old granddaughter may grow up with fewer rights than I had" Here in Australia, gendered giving is also often an after thought. For 10 years, 100 Women has been dedicated in this space, advocating for and funding small grassroots organisations supporting and empowering women and girls facing disadvantage in Australia and around the world. We are committed to our vision of a more equitable world for women and girls. For women to feel safe, healthy, educated and free.
