Words matter and the proper words make a difference
#Palestinians #Arabs #Muslims are all groups who have been #marginalized or made to be #othered. That #dehumanization has enabled the US-backed #Israeli #genocide happening in #gaza right now. I navigate this dehumanization everyday. I am a visibly identifiable #Muslim woman who has been attacked and am a survivor of several #hatecrimes. While I’m not Palestinian, I have been to #Jerusalam and the #occupied #WestBank. I have experienced the way that #Muslims and #Arabs, even #Christians are treated in #Israel. I have #witnessed the #apartheid, #checkpoints, and #discrimination firsthand. I am not an armchair warrior spouting social media propoganda. The most striking part of my experience in Israel relates to how #israeli #security and #military would deal with me upon seeing my #Americanpassport. Sometimes I was treated better… and sometimes I was treated worse. What is it that’s said? A dog born in a stable is not a horse. But, I digress. I’m here to do the work to #buildtheworldforallourchildren. And it only happens when we connect, when we see each other as human, and we take action rooted in trust. That only starts when we can know each other. To that affect, I share this video from Morgan Cooper. She is an American, married to a Palestinian, and lives in the West Bank. She does an amazing job explaining a cultural concept that is innate for me, but doesn’t translate well for English speakers or people who do not share Muslim culture. With so many being murdered in Gaza and the West Bank, we hold our #martyrs or #shahid in the highest of esteem. #justice is a vital value in #islam. Hear how she explains the term, and maybe you’ll see that there’s more to learn and realize that Palestinians deserve life and defense and safety and dignity as much as any other human. And it’s important to remember, #Jews have faced/continue to face #antisemitism #pogroms and the #Holocaust. #Neveragain means never again, for anyone. Period.
