SAFETY: Waymo debuts new data hub to showcase its #safety Waymo, owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., has launched a new #data hub that compares Waymo's crash rates with those of humans. The hub will be regularly updated to provide transparency of the company's operations. Waymo operates in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin. The hub hosts data with methodologies that contrast autonomous and human driving performance. It also complies with industry best practices, such as the recently introduced RAVE (Retrospective Automated Vehicle Evaluation) checklist for safety evaluation, according to the company. Even amid investigations and some hesitancy around robotaxis, Amazon’s Zoox is driving its autonomous cars forward — and will begin testing in two more major cities: Austin and Miami. This demonstrates the persistence of Zoox and a similar strategy we’re seeing across this space: continue safeguarded testing and collect invaluable information in real time. The design of the vehicles alone underscore this determination. The cars don’t have steering wheels or pedals. For now, the robotaxis will operate with human safety drivers. Miami and Austin present unique challenges in that they’re dense urban areas, but also offer up vast potential, given that they’re popular tourist destinations and travelers could eventually especially benefit from robotaxis. When will that become a reality though? Still no word on that. The company has acknowledged that it’s still very much in its research phase and “here to learn.” https://lnkd.in/eXWvaiFs #zoox #robotaxis #selfdrivingcars #AV #autonomousvehicles #miami #austin #amazonrobotaxis

International collaboration remains on the ground (Q1, Q2, Q3) regardless of political clamor driven by different interests. Q1: "The public testing milestone has been several years in the making. Waymo first announced plans to build an electric autonomous ride-hail vehicle with Zeekr for the U.S. market in December 2021." Q2: "The new minivan-esque vehicle, which appears to be modeled after Zeekr’s upcoming Zeekr 009 minivan, is outfitted with Waymo’s sixth-generation hardware — a more cost-effective set of sensors than previous versions that is also designed to operate in winter environments." Q3: "Meaning that until Congress or the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration comes forward with a ruling about Chinese connected vehicles, the DMV will not change the way it issues permits." https://lnkd.in/gmRq4_Nr

Sales Director @ MOVE America | Bringing Together Global Thought Leaders from Every Vertical in the Urban Transport Ecosystem
Hyundai and Waymo have entered a multi-year partnership, blending the strengths of both companies to bring autonomous driving technology closer to everyday consumers. This collaboration leverages Waymo's cutting-edge autonomous systems with Hyundai's flagship electric vehicle (EV), the IONIQ 5, a marriage that could eventually result in fully autonomous, driverless vehicles available to the public. At the heart of this partnership is the integration of Waymo’s sixth-generation autonomous driving technology, aptly named the "Waymo Driver," into Hyundai’s IONIQ 5. This all-electric SUV, celebrated for its blend of performance, sustainability, and spacious design, will now be equipped with an advanced suite of sensors, software, and redundant systems to enable safe, autonomous driving. The collaboration is more than just a technological integration; it signals a shared commitment by both companies to push forward the limits of what autonomous vehicles (AVs) can achieve, especially in terms of safety, convenience, and sustainability. The IONIQ 5 will be custom-built with autonomous-ready features like redundant hardware and doors that can operate independently. Furthermore, its 800-volt electric architecture allows it to charge rapidly, ensuring it spends minimal time out of service, making it an ideal candidate for fleet operations. Hyundai’s new electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Georgia will produce these autonomous-ready IONIQ 5 vehicles, which will be integrated with Waymo's technology before deployment. Why This Matters: The Path to Safer, Smarter Roads; This partnership marks an important step toward mainstreaming autonomous driving. The vehicles, starting as part of the Waymo One fleet, will undergo rigorous on-road testing beginning in 2025. Eventually, these Waymo enabled IONIQ 5s will become available to riders across various regions, expanding the availability of fully autonomous ride-hailing services. Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차)’s president and COO, José Muñoz, underscored the significance of this partnership, citing both companies' commitment to improving transportation efficiency, safety, and convenience. According to Muñoz, the IONIQ 5’s design and performance, paired with Waymo’s autonomous capabilities, make this collaboration a game-changer for both companies and the future of mobility. #AutonomousVehicles #Hyundai #Waymo #ElectricVehicles #FutureOfMobility #TechInnovation #Sustainability #SmartTransportation

Waymo has announced that its autonomous ride-hailing service, Waymo One, is now open to everyone in San Francisco, following its 2020 launch in Phoenix, Arizona. This move aims to drive commercial success for automakers, despite regulatory scrutiny and investor concerns about the high costs of developing the technology. Waymo began testing in San Francisco in 2021, with a specialist on board, and about 300,000 people have since signed up. Waymo's expansion comes after receiving approval from the California Public Utilities Commission to operate in Los Angeles and nearby cities. Competitors like GM-backed Cruise and Amazon's Zoox are also rapidly advancing in the autonomous vehicle race. #WaymoOne #AutonomousVehicles #SanFrancisco #RideHailing #SelfDrivingCars #WaymoExpansion

Recent Pew Research survey found that nearly two-thirds of Americans are hesitant to hop into a robotaxi Driverless cars are making waves in the U.S., but public trust in robotaxis is still uncertain. According to a Pew Research Center survey, nearly two-thirds of Americans aren’t keen on riding in a fully autonomous vehicle just yet. Much of this hesitation stems from unfamiliarity in cities where robotaxis haven't been introduced, while those in cities with driverless cabs are still wary after high-profile accidents, such as those involving General Motors-owned Cruise. Tesla, known for its bold claims on self-driving technology, is about to take a major leap with the unveiling of its long-anticipated robotaxi. However, despite its grand promises, the company’s current autonomous driving system, which still requires a human behind the wheel, has been the subject of regulatory scrutiny and numerous lawsuits following hundreds of crashes. Industry experts argue that even a polished presentation from Elon Musk won’t be enough to convince the public of the safety of Tesla’s robotaxi network. https://lnkd.in/edU3Xgiq

Waymo, a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, has expanded its robotaxi service in San Francisco, opening it to all users after previously limiting access to a waitlist. This expansion marks a pivotal moment for the company, showcasing its ability to navigate one of North America's most challenging urban environments. Waymo faces ongoing challenges despite the broader rollout, including safety concerns and public backlash. Federal investigations are examining multiple incidents involving Waymo's vehicles, though the company maintains that its technology reduces the frequency of injury-causing accidents compared to human drivers. The expansion comes amid a backdrop of declining funding and setbacks for competitors like Cruise, which recently faced severe safety issues. Waymo's cautious and incremental approach aims to balance rapid growth with safety and reliability, striving to demonstrate that driverless taxis can become a profitable and sustainable business model. What do you think of autonomous cars? Would you ride a Waymo? If you have what was your experience?
