On Wednesday, our Mine Design and Infrastructure workstream held their last meeting before the EMC’s closure in September. The workstream has evolved over the years with a focus on accelerating and optimising mine electrification through analysis of mine design options, infrastructure requirements, and the electrification business case. In particular, the group collaborated on low emission mine designs, mine electrical infrastructure, electric mine simulation, mine study processes and mine valuation modelling. Key outcomes achieved include: • Electric mine valuation work, which built an understanding of the value levers for electric underground mines when compared to diesel powered equivalents. A valuation model was developed in partnership with Perth-based company Model Answers which was applied to two EMC member projects and allowed lessons in valuation to be shared across the EMC. • Application of mine simulation tools to understand electric mine operating models, opportunities and risks. The work included a global crowd challenge, in conjunction with EMC members, that attracted companies from around the world to propose approaches for developing a scalable electric mine design simulation platform. • An investigation into Energy Management System (EMS), included a market-testing Request for Information process to understand what EMS products were available in the market and the capability of those products to meet the required functionality. • Exploration of standards and designs for charging connectors and infrastructure, including engagement with suppliers. • Sharing information on electrical infrastructure requirements for equipment trials, underground mine ventilation opportunities and other real life case studies. • Countless opportunities for collaboration with like-minded peers.
