In the most unexpected of places, Rwanda, I had the pleasure of meeting Radzi Hamzah, MD MPH another Malaysian professional. Our connection, facilitated by LinkedIn and our mutual acquaintance, Dr. Amalina Ismail. M.D., MHA. from McKinsey & Company underscored the unique power of professional networks in bringing together like-minded individuals across the globe. Radzi’s transformation from a dedicated medical doctor to a trailblazer in healthcare improvement, with a current postgraduate engagement at Harvard, is not only commendable but deeply inspiring. His journey exemplifies the versatility and impact healthcare professionals can achieve beyond traditional boundaries. Our exchange, sparked by a casual reference to California through Radzi’s T-shirt, led to the discovery of our mutual stay in Boston last year, highlighting the small world we operate in. More importantly, our conversation delved into shared interests that resonate deeply with both of us: • Policy and System Improvement: We discussed how critical it is to refine policies and systems within the healthcare sector. Such enhancements have a domino effect, empowering medical professionals to deliver superior patient care. It’s clear that strategic changes at the systemic level are fundamental for advancing healthcare outcomes. • Human Capacity Building in Healthcare: Just as in any sector, healthcare, especially in developing countries, requires significant investment in human capacity building. The development of skills and knowledge among healthcare professionals is crucial for sustainable growth and improvement in patient care standards. This encounter was a profound reminder of the power of professional networking and the shared aspirations that drive us. Last week, I was privileged to join eminent health leaders and experts in “a knowledge sharing lab” . During the sessions, leaders discussed among other issues how their past experiences as ministers could be used to support serving and newly appointed ministers to navigate the challenges that characterize the role of the minister of health in Africa. The health sector in Africa is complex and continues to face many challenges, from infectious diseases to chronic illnesses, underfunding leading to weak infrastructure and shortage of human resources. However, with the right support for leadership in and resources, it is possible to accelerate progress and improve the health outcomes of people across the continent. Such support will necessarily include ministerial capacity development. It is commendable that the Africa CDC has taken on this responsibility with great enthusiasm. A sample of what some former ministers shared last week during sessions demonstrate immeasurable readiness to support this novel initiative…… ✅“ I was the minister for health in my country for 15 years. How I wish I had a leadership coach to support me when I was first appointed” ( former minister). ✅“ I was a minister for health in my country for just about three years. Given the complexity of the system, a capacity building program as part of my orientation would have gone a long way in flattening my learning curve” (former minister). ✅“ Although I had previously served in other sectors as a minister, nothing had prepared me for the role of a minister for health. A leadership development program for my senior colleagues and I, would have helped me to navigate the challenges of the sector “ ( my quote).

Today, I had the privilege of attending the Ministry of Health's launch event for 6 Key Strategies and Guidelines. Dr. Christopher Simoonga, Permanent Secretary under Administration at the Ministry of Health, officiated as guest of honor at this event. What stood out to me the most was Dr. Simoonga's strong emphasis on the crucial role of digitization in our modern world. When people in key positions of power speak about digitization, I have faith in its rapid advancement. The PS created a light moment by proudly showing launch attendees how he was able to deliver his speech from his phone (ultimately going paperless), I realized the PS had effortlessly turned what could have been a routine moment into a powerful illustration of embracing digital tools and by so doing showed us all how digitization is a powerful tool in enhancing communication, efficiency, and effectiveness. This experience highlighted the urgency for all of us to adapt and fully embrace digital transformation. In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, those who refuse to swim in the digital lake will inadvertently be swept away by its current. I remain eager to see more individuals and organizations in Zambia embracing digital transformation. Embracing digitization isn't merely about keeping up; it's about unlocking new possibilities, driving innovation, and ultimately, improving outcomes for all. #DigitalTransformation #Innovation #Adaptation #EmbraceChange
