I’ve been hiring for 17+ years at my agency. My #1 hiring tip is to not settle for “good enough”. Let me explain… Hiring uncertainty is a reality, and despite thorough qualification processes, it's challenging to predict if someone will be a great hire. Sunk costs–the time spent sifting resumes and interviewing candidates–may lead us to give candidates some slack and benefit of the doubt, leading to confirmation bias in our decision to hire them. When we sense a new hire isn't a good fit, our inclination is often to "work with it" and provide feedback. While interventions may succeed for those with great attitudes & alignment, in most cases, if honest efforts don't yield improvement, parting ways is the best decision. Our approach to improving our hiring processes: 1. Establish clear standards 2. Define non-negotiable behaviors, attitudes, & communication styles that embody our definition of excellence 3. Invest time in living and defending these standards to facilitate the identification of those who don't fit in immediately. Outsiders without full context may label such approaches as "cult-like" or lacking empathy, but preserving a certain level of excellence requires tough choices & resistance to compromise. --- What's your hiring approach?

A recent post I came across had a hiring manager boasting that it took them less than 10 minutes to hire someone for an entry-level role. They were arguing for 'hiring fast' instead of a process that consists of 4-5 rounds and a take-home assessment. I'd argue that a structured multi-step process is an absolute necessity if you want to fill your team with quality, skilled, diverse employees. Sure, many recruitment processes are unnecessarily bloated, but if you are hiring someone in less than 10 minutes based on a 'gut feeling' you are being swayed entirely by both conscious and unconscious biases.

Read This Book For Exceptional Hiring Outcomes Over 17 years working with different firms, the client with the very best hiring outcomes followed a few simple rules in this book. We never lost a single individual to a competing firm in a decade. Every single individual that we wanted to offer, accepted the role. And a number of hires have been 'excellent performers'. It's very easy to read, and I'd suggest a 'must' if you're involved in making hiring decisions. Hiring the best talent will always be hard. Take advantage of the fact that your competitors have an average approach to hiring. Because the only competitive advantage is talent. The book gives simple guidelines and an excellent structure to follow. You don't have to follow the specific questions the book gives, but you should have some kind of structure. You should take notes immediately after each meeting. It only takes 2 minutes. You should be able to sell the candidates well. Note: this will be a different conversion for each person. A few golden pieces: "Get the talent side of the equation wrong, and you'll always face rough waters. You'll spend all of your time dealing with an endless torrent of 'what' issues. Get it right, and you'll have clear skies ... The right 'who' will take care of those issues" 'The difference (between any firm) is in execution. And execution is determined by people'. "Decide to make better 'who' decisions, and you will enjoy your career more, make more money, and have more time for the relationships that matter most'
