The Ideal Hammertoe Implant – HammerTube™ Hammertoe System – Rigid Fixation on Either Side of the Joint Paragon 28 set out to create the ideal hammertoe system when developing the HammerTube™ Hammertoe System. The patent pending HammerTube™ is a single piece titanium sprayed PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) intended for use in proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint fusions. The HammerTube™ implant is constructed from PEEK, a non-reactive biomaterial which closely matches the mechanical properties of the bone. The HammerTube™ implant is coated both proximally and distally with a porous titanium spray to increase mechanical fixation on either side of the joint when compared to uncoated implants. The titanium plasma spray creates a greater friction coefficient than uncoated PEEK allowing the implant to resist rotational and pullout forces. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was completed to optimize the outer spray diameter and drill diameter to ensure a tight fit between the implant and the canal without broaching surrounding trabecular bone which can lead to a loss of fixation.
