The Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) is proud to highlight the remarkable achievements of Moriba Jah, an associate professor of Aerospace Engineering at the Cockrell School of Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin. Jah serves as a Principal Investigator for AFOSR and is recognized as a fellow at TED Conferences, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the Air Force Research Laboratory, among others. Currently, Jah is the Principal Investigator for two programs with Program Officer Michael Yakes. #BlackHoleWeek Thursday Feature: Supermassive Black Holes Launch Newborn Radio Jets 🌌 In November 2020, a group of NRL researchers led a team of scientists who discovered some of the youngest known radio jets ever seen, launched by growing supermassive black holes in the centers of distant galaxies. These jets were estimated to be only decades old - this is infancy in the life span of space phenomenon! How could NRL scientists detect these jets at such an early stage? VLASS (Very Large Array Sky Survey) The age of the black holes offers a unique opportunity to study their formation and growth. This could help us understand how galaxies and black holes evolve together over billions of years. The House Appropriations Committee released its Commerce, Justice, and Science bill, which includes the budgets for the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Standards & Industrial Technology (NISIT), and the NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The legislation is a mixed bag of funding increases and cuts for each agency, with NSF receiving a small increase, NASA seeing minimal change, and NIST taking a cut. 🚀 With aluminium to Moon and Mars: NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration recently built and successfully tested a 3D-printed rocket engine nozzle made of the novel aluminium alloy 6061-RAM2. The innovative nozzle is lighter than conventional nozzles and thus paves the way for space flights that can carry more payload – and mass is critical for future deep space missions to Moon, Mars and beyond, it requires advanced materials.     Aluminium stands out among other metals due to its lower density and the capacity to create strong yet lightweight components. The novel aluminium variant represents the newest advancement within the RAMFIRE project of NASA, it’s weldable and heat-resistant enough for the use in rocket engines. Navier Stokes Equations in Non-Dimensional Form!   Freestream Reynolds number appears in the diffusion term, which highlights the fact that for high speed flow (Re tends to infinity), viscous effects are reduced to an insignificant level and flow behaves like inviscid nature. Viscous effects are confined to a thin layer around the body, which is called the boundary layer. For low speed flow, viscous terms dominate. Application: Creeping flow & Stokes flow. This technique can ease the analysis of the problem at hand, and reduce the number of free parameters. THROWBACK THURSDAY... Looking back at our journey with Cygnus, it’s hard to believe that it’s been over a decade since we first tested the Cygnus ORB D1 Service Module- in the fall of 2010! Our initial test was a monumental effort, involving approximately 12 servohydraulic actuators with force capacities ranging from 7,000 to 100,000 lbs. We used over 400 strain channels and employed laser tracking technology to capture structural deflection at discrete points on the structure in three directions to obtain displacement vector. Since then, we have expanded our testing capabilities dramatically, integrating a wider range of actuators, now spanning from 600 to 220,000 lbs. Our commitment to monitoring the health and behavior of our structures during testing is unwavering. We can independently control up to 32 actuators at one time, while simultaneously monitoring and plotting up to 500 channels of strain and deflection. Just this week Northrop Grumman successfully launched the 21st Cygnus mission to the ISS for NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
