In early motherhood, our career often feels like a means to an end. It can feel more like a job, not a fulfilling career. It’s rare to find yourself in a role that offers both fulfillment and the freedom you crave in this season of life. I know how hard that can be. When I returned from my 2nd maternity leave, I didn’t see my job as my career. At that time, I was deliberate about not wanting to climb the ladder. Instead, I focused on mastering certain skills that I could take with me into whatever came next (entrepreneurship). Was it easy to stay in that role, knowing it wasn’t long-term? Yes—and here’s why: there was a clear, specific purpose behind it. And that's what I'd encourage you to do—get clear on what purpose your current role serves. It doesn’t have to be deep, but it does have to be SOMETHING if you want to stay motivated. And one day, if you truly want to feel fulfilled in all areas of life, including your career—it will happen. Because you approach life with intention. This is a season. A very specific season. So for now, trust your gut about what your career is serving as a vehicle for in this moment. And never apologize for doing what feels right for you. Why Some Career Moms Say No To Promotion, Even Though They Want It. Among the growing trend of mothers who are pausing their careers to be with their children more, there are a growing number of working mothers who want a flourishing career and successful motherhood. This post is about the latter. Moms who want to be successful at work and home end up burning the candle at both ends. However, some of them do it without knowing how to effectively handle the pressure of meeting multiple demands placed on them and end up overwhelmed. In a state of overwhelm,  ➤ We perceive the problem to be bigger than what it is. ➤ We feel incapable of handling the problem. ➤ We don’t want to deal with the problem. An overwhelmed mother sees promotion at work as: ✿ More things on her plate. (“How am I going to handle all that?!”) ✿ Less quality time with kids. (“What if I never get to spend any quality time with my kids?!” ) ✿ Even less time for herself. (“I might not be left with any free time for my health routines.”) Viewed from this perspective, the promotion doesn’t look like a viable next step even though that job is their dream. They can turn this around by learning how to effectively balance career, motherhood, and personal well-being with the right skills, techniques, attitude, and mindset. By knowing how to set boundaries for various life areas and how to respect them without any guilt, you will gain the confidence to handle life’s challenges and feel more capable of taking the next steps in your career. 

I lied. Motherhood does impact your career. And it did impact mine. It may not look like it on social media. But here's the truth. - I didn't take up any work that required any kind of travel. - I prioritized stability and flexibility in my career. - I would have most likely made more money in the last 2 years if I wasn't pregnant or parenting. But here is also the truth: - Motherhood gave me more clarity in my career than ever before. - It gave me focus and skills that have honestly improved the quality of my work. - It's redirected me to an even stronger career path ahead and given my work more purpose. (its a marathon, not a sprint) So, yes there is no hiding from the fact that our careers are more impacted by parenting than our male counterparts but the impact can be as positive as often spoken of negatively. It doesn't have to mean it makes our career become less. But yes, it does make them different. But last I checked, different is GOOD. Today, I find myself reflecting on a piece of early career advice that I initially disagreed with... At the outset of my career, I was advised to avoid discussions concerning kids and motherhood in professional settings. From the moment this advice was handed down to me, I knew I didn't want it to define my reality. I am grateful that throughout my career, I've discovered environments where the presence of my children is not just accepted but welcomed. In fact, for me they are more than just present; they are prominently featured in my life. My workspace often doubles as the playroom, and it's not uncommon to find my office floor cheerfully covered with Lego pieces. I genuinely believe that being a mom has provided ample practice in honing the critical management skills that I deploy daily in my professional life, including: 1. Projects are time sponges - it will always take longer than you expect so set your expectations correctly. 2. Everyone is unique - treat them that way to help them unlock their potential. 3. Time is precious - do the most important piece first you may not have time for the rest. 4. Keep task lists short - when a long list of todos is provided, you better believe none of them are getting done. In summary, the fusion of my professional role and motherhood has enriched my career in ways I could never have foreseen and am forever grateful for. "Daddy/Mommy, why aren't you at work today?" 🙄 I recently saw a friend and his 4-year-old daughter, who was home for the day. She's typically at preschool, but was at home during a "work day." My friend has been out of work for nearly 9 months, doing the relentless #LinkedIn #jobsearch dance that so many others do daily. #Jobseekers are hard enough on themselves, but sometimes gut punches come in totally unexpected ways, like when your kid innocently starts to ask about your job status. To them, it's nothing more than something out of their ordinary routine: Kid goes to school, parent(s) go to work. But to the parent, it cuts deep. "Why aren't you at work today?" is such a simple, innocuous question yet it hits right at your #selfworth. Right at the fact that you've been trying, and trying, and TRYING to get work. But, again, like so many other amazing, qualified, successful #candidates out there, the plane hasn't landed yet and you don't know when it will. As devastating as it might feel to be judged by your kid (real talk: you're projecting), how's this for an alternative school of thought? When our kids are little, we get one shot with them at #childhood. Time flies and next thing we know, they're too big to pick up and their #imaginations have moved on from tea parties and building forts and "keeping the uppies" with you to wanting time with their friends, a phone, or worse yet, TikTok. As hard as it is to shake off the job seeker exhaustion, maybe leaning into their childhood #joy is EXACTLY what you need. Think about all that time you missed with them before while #travelingforwork, in #latemeetings, missing dinner while on Zoom calls, etc... and make that time count now. Laugh with them, play with them, be present with them when you normally wouldn't be able to. I promise it will help you take the the edge off, while at the same time your littles will be beyond delighted that they get YOU, and only you, during times you were previously unavailable. So "Daddy/Mommy, why aren't you at work today?" Here's a simple answer: "Daddy/Mommy's taking a little break from work right now and I'm so excited I get to spend more time with YOU." Go do it and watch your mood, your body and mind improve. All from leaning into the joy of your kid's childhood. You might even be able to reclaim your own.
