Are you in the Washington, D.C., area this week? Check out the Innovative Housing Showcase from June 7-9 at the National Mall! IMPEL's Reshma Singh, Yashima Jain and Nicholas Ryan of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Building Technologies Office will be in Booth F9 to talk about our program and the innovative building technologies spinning out of IMPEL at Berkeley Lab. 📢📅 𝐑𝐄𝐆𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐈𝐒 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐍 📅📢 The Fifth Estonian DC Innovation Workshop will be held in the TalTech NRG Building (room NRG-226), Ehitajate tee 5/10, Tallinn, Estonia, in cooperation with Current/OS Foundation. This edition will span over half a day on November 27, starting from 13:00. The technical program includes representatives of 8 countries who will deliver 17 presentations covering different topics of DC Technology. Presentations from the industry will dominate the technical program. The fifth workshop is dedicated to "Boosting Energy Efficiency, Security & Resilience." This event aims to create an engaging atmosphere for exchanging ideas and provide a coherent multidisciplinary outlook on the future of energy efficiency and the advantages of adopting DC systems. On Tuesday the 10th of September, I hosted the in-person workshop on 'When the turbines stop: strategies, opportunities and challenges for the management of end of life of wind infrastructure’, I organised during the summer months as part of my research project funded as part of the Vice-Chancellor's Early Career Researcher (VC ECR) Development Awards 2023-25 at the University of the West of England. The event aimed at bringing together a cross-disciplinary network consisting of planners, academics, waste management organisations, wind developers and asset owners, SMEs and circular economy specialists and governments. What an event it turned out to be! I was very lucky to have in the room twenty-two people that gave up their time and worked tirelessly to contribute their knowledge and insights on how to address this important topic. The energy in the room was amazing and I am looking forward to prepare and share a summary report and reflection on the contributions and hard work from the participants. If only pictures could talk. Spent two days at the CIRED (International Community on Electricity Distribution) Workshop in beautiful Vienna last week. I’ve presented our paper „Evaluating the trade-off between grid expansion and flexibility usage in electrical distribution grids“ which was co-authored by Florian Klein-Helmkamp, Maxim Müllender, Jan Martin Specht, Riemenschneider David and Andreas Ulbig as part of a joint project between E.ON and our Institute at RWTH. Our core findings are: - The cost optimal trade-off contains a sensible combination of grid expansion AND flexibility measures - The specific sweet spot is dependent on the grid structure - Urban grids: the usage of flexibility measures is highly efficient due to higher expansion costs and the higher availability of flexibility - Rural grids: high efficiency of grid expansion measures - Price driven operation of flexible units will lead to fundamentally different occurrence of congestions within the grids
