It is important to understand how physical and mechanical forces affect our cells and their micro-environment. Mechanical biomarkers are vital in pre-clinical disease modeling and drug testing, revealing tissue stiffness associated with various pathologies. For example, tumors often show altered stiffness compared to healthy tissue, aiding researchers in understanding tumor progression and treatment effectiveness. https://lnkd.in/gcPEkS4f Many years in the making - my first academic publication is now available for reading (open access) in Fluids and Barriers of the CNS! Many thanks to my UBC colleagues from the Michael Underhill lab who helped me put this together! Some fun highlights; 1) Novel sub-populations of blood vessel-associated cells (fibroblasts) can be found in the distinct "leaky" vasculature of the choroid plexus and pituitary gland 2) These novel fibroblasts are far more abundant in these regions than fibroblasts in the rest of the brain 3) Distinct transcriptomic markers define these sub-populations, including but not limited to CD34, claudin-11, GPR88, Tcf21 and alkaline phosphatase 4) Indole-n-methyltransferase, the putative DMT-synthesizing enzyme, is found exclusively in fibroblasts within the brain and is concentrated in the choroid plexus and pituitary gland (and is mostly absent from pinealocytes).
