Repost: Post doc in UNRULY SUSTAINABILITY https://lnkd.in/dNJe8CTa I am recruiting a 3-year Postdoctoral Fellow position at the Department of Sociology and Human Geography, University of Oslo with a possibility for a 4th year of teaching. The position is central within an interdisciplinary Thematic Research Group (TRG), UNRULY SUSTAINABILITY: Unruly Sustainability Challenges: addressing uncertainty in governing energy transitions, funded by UiO Energy. The work brings together thinking on uncertainty and energy justice from across disciplines, with a primary focus on methodological development. The position involves developing conceptual and methodological tools for understanding how uncertainty shapes trajectories of change in renewable energy projects. The post doc will be part of an exciting interdisciplinary team that includes qualitative political ecology, musicology, bioacoustics, and stochastic mathematics analyses of sociomaterial change. Candidates who are creative with an interest in interdisciplinarity and socionatural methods are strongly encouraged to apply. Training in methods such as acoustic analysis will be provided. You must have submitted your PhD thesis for evaluation by the closing application date (April 30th) in a relevant discipline (Geography, Science and Technology Studies (STS), (Socio)Environmental Systems Analysis, Environmental Studies, or cognate disciplines). See announcement for more details and feel free to contact me. Theoretically, the UNRULY SUSTAINABILITY project examines sociomaterial ‘chaotic’ processes, those without stable probability patterns, to probe material and epistemic uncertainties, or what the project defines as ‘unruly’ processes. Dynamics that underpin energy justice concerns rarely exhibit stable probability patterns. Assuming they do can lead to failed outcomes—like dams bursting or further marginalising vulnerable people. The project aims to generate new methodologies for evaluating how uncertainty shapes energy justice concerns and outcomes of renewable energy projects. University of Oslo offers excellent employment conditions with a liveable wage, paid holiday, sick, and maternity leave, and a positive working environment

🎓 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗿'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆: 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀! 🎓 ✍ Today, our Bachelor students are starting their final theses. To help you successfully master the next few weeks, Prof. Dr. Marianela Fader and Prof. Tobias Hank have compiled their most important tips for a successful Bachelor's thesis. 📚 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 The first hits on Google Scholar are not always the best. Proceed systematically: Vary your search terms and make targeted selections. Use the snowball system - one relevant article often leads to others. Use scientific publications in academic journals in German and English! 🗺️ 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗽𝘀 Make sure that you analyze your research area in a spatially differentiated way. Depending on the topic, conditions may vary greatly spatially. As Geographers, maps are one of our most important tools to communicate our research. Use your GIS skills to illustrate your research area, research question or your results. Do not forget: Pay attention to meaningful captions and a sufficiently large display. A detailed map can be as large as a whole page! 🎓 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 Subjective expressions such as “impressive” or “threatening” do not belong in a scientific paper. Exception: The statements come from quotations. Also use the spell checker! 📏 𝗔𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆, 𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 Summarize your content precisely. Do you find it difficult to recognize the superfluous? Have fellow students proofread your work! 📋 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 A good outline helps to tell a clear story. What is your research question? Which methods, data and for which area do you want to answer it? What are your results and what do they mean? 🌎 📚 The 2024 National Student Survey (NSS) results again demonstrate the benefits and opportunities of studying geography. The survey, completed by final-year students in every UK university, shows improved student satisfaction among geography undergraduates, with a higher percentage of positive responses on all questions than last year's survey results. Results also revealed that geography students are highly satisfied with specific elements of their university experience, with 95% of geography respondents agreeing that their teaching staff were good at explaining things, higher than the average rate for all subjects (91.1%) 👉 Head here to read more: https://lnkd.in/ecnmfFDr

Learning physics helps us to understand the world around us. In Finnish curriculum, physics as its own subject starts in lower secondary school when students are 13 years old. Before that physical phenomena have been studied in environmental science, biology and geography lessons. My first attendance at the Society for American Archaeology in ten years is in the books! Here are some of my thoughts that no one asked for 😁 1️⃣EXCITED: to see so many women representing in the field of CRM, especially at the expo. I felt welcomed and optimistic. 2️⃣ OPTIMISTIC: about to the move towards community-led research in bioarchaeology. As a non-academic practitioner, I strongly believe research should always serve the community. 3️⃣ CONCERNED: about a deepening divide between academic and non academic spaces in bioarchaeology. Over 1000 individuals claimed membership in the bioarchaeology interest group and while this is wonderful for the field, I can’t help but be concerned about the job market. There are simply not enough jobs and many students seem unaware of that fact and lost as to what to do about it. I will be making more content targeted at bioarchaeology students and also am considering offering career exploration workshops. 💖 As an aside, the pink business cards were a huge hit in New Orleans (as you can tell from the definitely not photoshopped image because I forgot to take any photos during the conference 😂 )! 🤔 If you attended, what were your takeaways? #nonacademic #careers #bioarchaeology #archaeology #graduatestudents

A post on the craft of teaching...this is an excerpt from our Geography department's submission for the Geography Association's Quality Mark, which they deservedly achieved. It reminds us how rigorous the best teaching is. In this example, a significant piece of assessed work has gone through four stages: initial formative assessment, then structured student reflection, then re-writing the same piece to improve it and finally re-marking with feedback. It is inspiring to see how much care and attention goes into setting high expectations and improving students' performance.

One thing I have learned as a seasonal Geography tutor at Wits school of education is that Understanding questions is the key to exam success. Many students rush into answering without truly comprehending what is being asked, leading to poor results. By encouraging students to slow down, break down questions, identify keywords, plan their responses, and practice regularly, we can help them unlock their potential and approach exams with confidence. It's not just about knowing the answers; it's about understanding the questions.
