Congratulations to Ingrid Navarro, Pablo Ortega Kral, Jay Patrikar, Haichuan(Jack) Wang, ZELIN YE, Jong Hoon Park, EIT, Jean Oh, and Sebastian Scherer for winning Best Student Paper at the 2024 American Institute of Aeronautics (AIAA) Conference! 👏 The paper, a collaboration between the CMU BIG lab and The AirLab at Carnegie Mellon University, was recognized in the Air Transportation Systems technical discipline. Many times in lectures about getting ahead and leadership, we hear the example about how people remember the first man on the moon, but not the second. Well, I think it is a wrong example to quote. The moon mission was a highly disciplined one, with each person having a specific critical role to play. Armstrong was the Commander, Buzz Aldrin the Lunar Module pilot and Michael Collins was the Command Module pilot. They had orders and they all followed them to the tee, without which Neil Armstrong wouldn’t have landed on the moon and safely back to earth. Had any one of them said that they wanted another role, the mission would have fallen apart. This is not to belittle Armstrong’s role, but to highlight that teamwork is of paramount importance and cannot be brushed aside in the quest for personal glory. A better example to quote here would be the Wright brothers. Not formal education and very little resources, they made powered flight possible through constant experimentation, perseverance and effort. What do you think? I am delighted to share that our team, Team 7: Folarin Olaobaju, Pedro Cupertino, Faisal MOHAMMAD and I, were recently selected as the #1st place winning team in the Innovation Works 2023 competition sponsored by Lockheed Martin Skunk Works®. I have got plenty of gratitude, much more than I can put into words right now as I write this post with trembling fingers. However, I must thank all the judges from the Lockheed Martin team, the Wichita State University Aerospace Faculty, Dr. Suresh Keshavanarayana and Brian Hershberger for the amazing opportunity of being heard by all of you! And it goes without saying, thanks a ton and congratulations to all in our #team for our hard work and determination! We did it! Moving onto the juice, this year's competition theme was focused on "Incorporating Artificial Intelligence to enhance collaborative combat in establishing air dominance". Team 7 proposed a solution that makes use of a Multi-layer Perceptron Artificial Neural Network to integrate Predictive Maintenance and the logistics of Supply Chain Management in a singular function, with the ability to forsee maintenance and supply chain bottlenecks. This was my second time attempting this competition, the 4th of its kind. Learning from past mistakes, we tried to view the problem at hand from a distinctive perspective, thinking about root causes! After all, a grounded airplane cannot get airborne, let alone dominate. My biggest takeaway from this is how to think systematically in order to come up with #practical solutions to #complex problems. Lastly, I would recommend such competitions to anyone who likes to sit down with a bunch of people, put deep thought and talk a problem out until its sorted. They are a great #teambuilding exercise and an outlet for your #leadership skills. I especially encourage Wichita State University students to experience the #thrill of the Lockheed Martin #Innovation Works competition! #aviation #aerospace #design

PhD student Ciarra Ortiz traveled to the National Society of Black Engineers 50th Annual Convention, representing both MIT AeroAstro and the Patti Grace Smith Fellowship, to share her journey into the aerospace sector and inspire others to do the same! Her best advice? “Look beyond the classroom to understand your passion and place in aerospace,” Ortiz says. “The path is winding and sometimes unconventional, but the love and admiration for astronauts, planes, rockets, or cubesats is what fuels our determination to trailblaze a path in aerospace. I am happy to share that I have recently begun my Masters of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University! One of my favorite things about this program is the flexibility to build my own engineering degree.
