How to Bring Lightness to the Tough Stuff with Lauren LoGuidice Comedian Lauren LoGiudice loves delving into difficult topics. A few years ago, she found out she was donor conceived after a lifetime wondering why she was the odd-one-out in an Italian-American family, and has been creating comedy about it ever since. During the day she teaches comedy to non-comedians who are seeking to bring similar lightness to their story and in the process has discovered patterns and tools that can help you do the same. Stand-up comedy, a form that brings laughter to the modern stage, actually has a long and rich history. Its earliest roots can be traced back to ancient Greek drama, where actors used improvisation to satirize society and politics. In medieval Europe, the performances of court jesters also mirrored the early forms of stand-up, often humorously critiquing monarchs and nobility. As we moved into modern times, stand-up evolved into a significant art form that breaks from tradition and reflects the voices of the times. From the vaudeville clubs of America to the working men's clubs of Britain, stand-up has gradually transformed into a medium for expressing personal views and social commentary. Today, it is not just entertainment, but a mirror for observing and reflecting on culture. #PowerOfStandup #CulturalInsight #talkshow"

I love stand up comedy but being deaf and non-signing excludes me from enjoying many live performances. For this reason, I get my stand up comedy fix online with captioning. My husband and I will frequently scroll together and have a good laugh. Lately, comedy reels on social media have been letting me down with the captions. It’s not that I don’t have plenty to choose from, it’s that I have to work out what these weird words are as people try to avoid upsetting algorithms. It is getting so bad that last night, I got up and walked away in frustration. ‘Seggs’ is just one example. Come on! That is NOT how the people are saying sex in their comedy skits (I asked!). Then the use of emojis to replace words. By the time I work out what those emojis mean, I’ve missed the punchline. This is not inclusion. This is infantilising and excluding d/Deaf people. Even if unintended, it’s a barrier to equitable enjoyment. If you have to *bleep* the words and put that in the captions, that’s equitable. But do not - please - do not pretend to be inclusive only to exclude us with pretend words or words that are not actually being spoken. If you say it, spell it. If the algorithm on the platform of your choice doesn’t like it, then you need a new platform. #Deaf #Captions #Comedy #SocialMedia #Exclusion #Accessiblity #Disability

😂 For all the people out there who think comedy is funny when you put others down... I want you to know, that is what bad comedians do... The ones that are trying to have their job cut out easy for them. Try making a joke, that empowers people or celebrates them instead of putting them down. IT CAN BE DONE. If you can do that, then you are an actual comedian. Comedy isn't the intersection of misogony and racism or even being transphobic... That's what male comedians had to do for generations because their egos where too fragile to sit themselves down and put in the work to write actual comedy... If you are going to make fun of people, or put anyone down... Start by doing so yourself, not others. Because laughing at yourself or not taking yourself too seriously its actually a great skill to have... Putting down woman or minorities, well... That just isn't funny at all honestly. It's just a lazy way out... 😂 #comedy #goldenglobes #creativeindustry #creativedirection #freelancecreative #wfh #misogony #racism #comedians
