Absolutely obsessed with Jay Sullivan's "Simply Said" and its profound implications for Customer Success. We often overlook three key communication guidelines: 🌟 Keep it short (emails and presentations) 🌟 Use simple language 🌟 Avoid jargon Two common traps we fall into: 🚫 Trying to showcase our intelligence. 🚫 Assuming everyone understands our industry jargon I learned this the hard way when a client asked me, "what is ROI?" after I used the term casually. It was a humbling reminder that not everyone speaks our language. In digital marketing, I used to drop "CTA" without a second thought, only to realize it caused confusion. Now, I make sure to break down these terms clearly. Another eye-opener from Jay's book: We often structure presentations based on our preferences, not our audience's needs. “We should ONLY talk about things that’ll impact your audience's needs. "Your message is never about you, rarely about your content, but how your audience needs to use your content”. Instead of starting a QBR with "My today's agenda is XYZ...", how about starting our intros with: "We’re here today because you want to understand your XYZ performance. I thought it’d be helpful to spend the next 15 minutes discussing XYZ. How does that sound?" Client: “Shweta, what’s your method for consistently getting email responses?” Me (thinking internally): “Ah, so they’re curious about the ‘formula’ behind it.” 😄 What I actually said: “Well, let me break down my 3-step approach:” Step 1: Apply a bit of behavioral science. Think of your client interaction like an initial research collaboration. You wouldn’t start by asking for a multi-year commitment upfront. Instead, you ease into the conversation with something like, ‘How’s your current workload?’—a question that invites dialogue and creates engagement without overwhelming the recipient. Step 2: Introduce an element of curiosity. Because, much like an intriguing hypothesis, a well-crafted subject line should provoke interest. For example, “A potential solution to streamline your experiments (without losing coffee breaks)”—this type of subject naturally encourages a click-through. Step 3: Don’t forget the human factor. Conclude your email with warmth and authenticity, rather than the tone of a sterile auto-generated message. People respond better to genuine interactions, not “Best regards, Your Email Bot 3000.” A little personal touch goes a long way.
