Founded in 2019, CarbonEthics is dedicated to achieving measurable impact through ecosystem restoration, carbon reduction, and community support. With this investment, the company will broaden its work with stakeholders in the private sector, government, and NGOs to co-develop projects that drive decarbonization, enhance biodiversity, and uplift local communities. By 2030, CarbonEthics aims to protect 8 million hectares of land, sequester over 160 million tonnes of CO2e, and create sustainable economic opportunities for thousands of beneficiaries.

🌊 This week, I attended the National Dialogue on Blue Carbon Business Models hosted by CIFOR, and I’ve been reflecting on the roses 🌹, buds 🌱, and thorns 🌵 from the discussions. The Roses: CIFOR scientists highlighted the realities of mangrove conservation in Indonesia, which holds one-fourth of the world’s mangroves. Most of these forests are already protected (eg hutan lindung), making additionality essential for any project viability. Carbon markets favor restoration, but only 5% of mangroves require restoration (Sasmito et al., 2023), making additionality and layering conservation and restoration credits do or die for any project to be viable. The Buds: Indonesia’s emerging domestic carbon market, spearheaded by OJK, has the potential to address ethical challenges, ensuring companies damaging Indonesia’s ecosystems are held accountable domestically, rather than relying on offsets from the Global North. The market is currently a regulatory mess, but shortening the blue carbon supply chain will undoubtedly have domestic benefits. Polluters in East Kalimantan should be paying to restore and conserve ecosystems in... East Kalimantan. The Thorns: A recurring colonial narrative dominated the event. Carbon investments should support communities to build their own visions, with developers acting as supporters—not salespeople to dictate a carbon future. 👉 Project developers should support communities in building their own vision for the future—agnostically and on their terms. 👉 Carbon investment should serve as a tool to make that vision a reality. 👉 If a community rejects a deal because they don’t feel it aligns with their vision, this shouldn’t be seen as a failure, but as a win What’s missing? A meaningful discussion on human rights. Seven government ministries failed to touch on any aspect of how Indonesia’s regulatory frameworks will protect communities. Without clear legislation, carbon markets risk becoming a liability rather than a tool for justice - and based on our experience most of them are already negatively impacting local communities. Toolkits like this one → How National Legislation Can Advance Carbon Justice: A Policy Toolkit, need to be front and center in conversations as Indonesia scrambles to finalize its national carbon policies. It’s time for community-led, equity-driven, and accountable solutions to redefine blue carbon initiatives. 🌱 Planet Indonesia #BlueCarbon #Conservation #EquityDrivenSolutions

Indonesia’s president-elect Prabowo Subianto is eyeing a $65 billion green economy fund by 2028, fueled by the sale of carbon credits from rainforest preservation and reforestation projects. With a new regulator to oversee carbon markets, the plan is positioned to drive Indonesia’s energy transition and support its net-zero goals by 2060. However, the real challenge will be scaling up carbon credit sales in a highly competitive global market and attracting the necessary investment to meet these ambitious financial targets. Speaking to Reuters about the new green fund, managing director Christina Ng said "Indonesia's vast natural ecosystem offers scope for major carbon offset projects, but the targets are highly ambitious from financial and operational perspectives." The carbon market worldwide is heating up, and with good purpose, as governments are recognizing the opportunity for carbon credit instruments to play a pivotal role in creating market liquidity for funding giga-scale decarbonization. The recent NYC climate week has a prime take-away, decarbonization projects must demonstrate commercial viability at the right investment return without state-aid: it has to be able to stand on its own. We live in exceptional times, exemplary solutions required. #strategy #management #hydrogen #thessalonicaHydroship
