West Wind is back making the most of the Wellington wind, and absolutely smashing it! 💪 For more than a year West Wind Farm in Wellington has been operating with one arm tied behind its back - it's been generating at reduced capacity after developing a problem with one of its two transformers. So, over the last few weeks our team's been installing a new one to get West Wind back to full capacity - generating enough electricity for roughly 70,000 Kiwi homes. We’re very grateful to Transpower New Zealand for loaning us this transformer until a permanent replacement's ready next year, and a huge thanks to our contractors - MOVE Logistics Group, Beca, Ventia and ACME Group - for stepping up alongside the Meridian team at short notice. EV FireSafe has done a huge amount of research into EV safety, and one of their findings is that EVs are less likely to catch fire than ICE vehicles. A 104-tonne transformer’s not a quick or easy thing to move, especially when it has to be floated across a lake ⚓️ Last week we took delivery of a new transformer for Manapōuri Power Station - the first time a piece of generation equipment this size has been barged across Manapōuri, and the end of a long and carefully planned journey. After arriving at Bluff from Australia last week, the 135 MVA transformer was unloaded onto a trailer for the 170 km journey by road to Supply Bay, before making its way by barge across Lake Manapōuri. Following the slow journey across the lake, the 135 MVA transformer was then delicately reversed down a two-kilometre road access tunnel into the machine hall. The new transformer will increase generation capacity at Manapōuri from the current restricted limit of 640 MW to around 768 MW - close to the maximum 800 MW allowed under its consent conditions. It's an outstanding achievement by our team and suppliers, including MOVE Logistics Group, WSP in New Zealand Marine Industrial Design Ltd Meister Services and E-Type Engineering. Happy birthday to this grand old power station! 🎂 This weekend marks 90 years since Waitaki Power Station started providing power to New Zealand. Over half a million cubic metres of material was excavated to build it - almost entirely by pick and shovel! It's a concrete arch #dam with no spillway, designed to allow water to flow over the top if it floods. Waitaki Power Station started generating #electricity with two 15-megawatt generators - enough to meet almost half of the South Island's needs at that time. These days, it has seven 15-megawatt generating units and a total generation output of up to 105 megawatts. That's enough to power roughly 50,000 Kiwi homes. Waitaki Power Station has been providing Aotearoa with clean, #renewable electricity for almost a century now - here's to another 90 years! #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #HydroElectricity #HydroDam #Engineering

We’ve got some major maintenance happening at Manapōuri hydro power station. 🛠️ And because a lot of that work’s taking place a couple of hundred metres underground, it can make things a little tricky! It’s New Zealand’s biggest hydro power station, and it’s mostly hidden 200m underground! 😮 Manapōuri Hydro Station is located on the edge of Lake Manapōuri’s West Arm in Fiordland National Park, which has UNESCO World Heritage status as part of Te Wāhipounamu. Starting in 1964, the project took 1,800 workers eight years to complete in extremely harsh conditions. It was designed to produce huge amounts of electricity. At full noise it can produce up to 800 megawatts - that's enough to power roughly 620,000 homes.
