Kaiser Permanente Northern California Residency and Fellowship Programs hosts an annual two-week Resident Elective in Health Policy for our residents and fellows. The course is designed to orient our residents and fellows to the fast-changing world of health policy, increase their knowledge of key health policy issues facing their community and the nation, and prepare them to be effective physician-leaders and advocates in a systems-based practice. Participants of the Elective in Health Policy: Learn key aspects of U.S. health policy; Participate in intensive virtual seminars with policy experts in health disparities, health economics, public health, quality improvement, value-based care, and other fields; Understand their roles and opportunities within the local, state, and national health policy landscape; Apply policy analysis, assessment and recommendations to real-world challenges by completing a group capstone project in health policy; Translate their knowledge into practice; Disseminate the information learned with their colleagues. I am excited to hear that SDH will now be an integral part of health education and contribute to unlearn ancient concepts that project the biomedical system as the primary roadmap to health. Delivering the keynote address at The Georgia State University School of Public Health Grand Rounds Lecture & Research Conference was truly an honor. The opportunity to address esteemed colleagues, scholars and students in the field of public health on the topic of Principles, Values, and Practices Advancing Community-Centered, Equity-Driven Public Health Research was both humbling and rewarding. Engaging with individuals who share a commitment to advancing community-centered, evidence-informed research aimed at promoting health equity and justice was immensely gratifying. The collective dedication to addressing the complex challenges faced by communities through research grounded in principles of equity and justice is inspiring and indicative of the transformative potential within our field. In addition to delivering the keynote, I had the privilege of facilitating a discussion among GSU research faculty and our valued community partners. This dialogue provided a platform for sharing insights, experiences, and best practices in fostering equitable partnerships. By amplifying the voices of those directly impacted by our work and centering their perspectives in our research endeavors, we can collectively strive towards more impactful and sustainable outcomes. Overall, the conference served as a pivotal moment for reflection, collaboration, and reaffirmation of our shared mission to advance public health research that is not only evidence-informed but also rooted in principles of equity, justice, and community engagement.
