The prevalence of school police departments has more than doubled over the past two decades to a point where school district police departments account for nearly 20% of all sworn school resource officers in the country. What happened in Uvalde should have been a tipping point to prove further that police, including school police departments, do not keep students safe. A new study co-written by University of Massachusetts Amherst public policy researcher Brittany Houston finds police body cams are a crucial tool in building public trust, and were considerably more important than the race or gender of the individuals involved in an incident involving police use-of-force interactions with civilians. “People see body cameras as a mechanism to improve accountability within police departments,” says Houston. “They are a tool that can be used by departments to engender trust with the public.” Learn more: https://bit.ly/3t2IO4I
