I speak to lots of people on their journey to becoming an FD and/or CFO, and repeatedly get asked this question: ‘What skill matters the most in order to get the top job in Finance?’ Whilst this might vary sector by sector, in my opinion it’s your business partnering and commercial skills that are key. Yes, being a numbers person and technically astute matters to a certain extent, but I think this is secondary to your ability to partner, support and influence the leadership cohort of your organisation. I agree, whilst consulting firms should also focus on other CxO roles like the CEO and CIO, they shoudn't underestimate the increasing relevance of the role of the CFO. Especially since the role of the CFO in many firms has transcended beyond traditional financial stewardship to become a strategic partner in decision-making processes. Large scale IT deployments have been an important driver for consulting growth over the last years. Nonetheless, translating this into “less attention for the CFO” in my opinion is a strategic mistake. According to a recent ‘EY Center for Executive Leadership’ study,    ▶️ CFOs play a critical role in cross-company business transformation and cost reduction initiatives   ▶️ CFOs are a driving force behind many transformative digital initiatives with relevance further increasing with GenAI   ▶️ CFOs often move on to CEO or other business leadership roles with significant impact Reason enough for consultancies to refocus strongly on CFOs if they are not already doing so.
