Driving Supply Chain Excellence Through Strategic Sales Solutions | Account Development Manager @ Ryder
U.S. grocers are adapting to #consumer shopping patterns in the face of #inflation. As households split their purchases among a wider variety of stores, #grocers are narrowing their product offerings rather than trying to be the jack of all trades in terms of product selection. This shift is prompting changes across #retail #supplychains, with stores focusing more on their private-label brands. According to Numerator, consumers bought groceries from an average of 20.7 different retailers over the past year, up 23% from four years ago. Sales of store brands were up 15% for the 52 weeks ended March 23 over the same time in 2022, according to AlixPartners.

Harking back to the days before supermarkets, Americans are dividing their food shopping among more stores to save money. Consumers bought groceries from an average of 20.7 different retailers between March 2023 and February 2024 according to data firm Numerator, up 23% from the same months between 2019 and 2020. In addition to visiting more stores, shoppers are also traveling to cheaper ZIP Codes to shop and pursuing loyalty programs and promotions in greater numbers, retail analysts say. Treasure-hunt grocery shopping is the latest example of consumers changing their behavior in response to the higher of prices in our lives, from the homes we live in to the daycares where we send our kids. Now, with groceries taking up the highest percentage of household budgets in 30 years, more shoppers are driving all over town in pursuit of deals. Keeping the household grocery bill under $250 a week now requires stops at Costco, Target, Publix, Sprouts and more. #inflation #groceryindustry #retail Rachel Wolfe

𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋 101: Both retailers and restaurants are feeling the pinch of a "more discriminating consumer" especially in lower income households. Couple this with inflationary pressures, and you have companies like McDonald's who reported last week of their first decline in US comp sales (0.7%) since 2Q2020. https://lnkd.in/e8yubyGX Big Lots, who previously reported a decline of 9.9% in comp sales back in June, may now close up to as many as 315 stores which would be about 23% of their total stores. https://lnkd.in/eHWvaryY So, what are comp sales anyway? In the retail world "comp sales" or "comparable sales" (and sometimes also referred to as "same-store sales") is a barometer that retailers and restaurants use to measure a store's current performance relative to a previous period. Comp sales helps these companies to assess the growth or decline of their existing stores. To calculate this, retailers and restaurants identify comparable stores that have been open for at least a year and are a similar size and merchandise mix as the store that is being analyzed. Then, they compare the revenues from the current period to the revenue from a similar period in the past. For example, if a retailer had $2 million in revenue last year and $2.5 million in revenue this year, the calculation would be: ($2.5 million - $2 million) / $2 million = 0.25 or 25% increase in comp store sales #Retail #RetailLasVegas #CompSales #ComparableSales #SaleStoreSales #McDonalds #ROICommercialRealEstate #Retail101
