On March 21, we celebrate Human Rights Day to honor those who fought for our freedom and the rights we enjoy today. Our Constitution is hailed as one of the most progressive in the world. The Constitution is the ultimate protector of our Human Rights, which were previously denied to the majority of our people under Apartheid. We commemorate Human Rights Day to reinforce our commitment to the Bill of Rights as enshrined in our Constitution. These rights include: Equality – everyone is equal before the law and has the right to equal protection and benefit of the law. Human dignity – everyone has inherent dignity and have their dignity respected and protected. Freedom of movement and residence – everyone has a right to freedom of movement and to reside anywhere in the country. Language and culture – everyone has the right to use the language and to participate in the cultural life of their choice. Life - everyone has the right to life.

Sometimes, in the journey for justice and equality, we find ourselves at a crossroads between action and endless deliberation. 🌈✊ Over the years, I've seen countless studies validate what we've always known in our hearts: everyone deserves to serve openly, proudly, and without fear of discrimination. Yet, the cycle of studying rather than acting continues to delay the progress we so desperately need. On a day that marked a significant victory in our ongoing fight, a reminder was placed in my hands, a congressional study done in 1993 on homosexuals in the military —a symbol of how far we've come and how unnecessary the delay was. It wasn't just about one policy or one group; it's about our collective struggle for dignity and respect. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ A poignant reminder of the journey we've undertaken and the obstacles we've overcome. This picture, which I've included with this message, symbolizes a pivotal moment in our history—a moment when the need for further study was overtaken by the imperative for equality and justice. Let's not wait for another study to tell us what's right. The evidence is overwhelming; the time for action is now. We must move beyond acknowledgments and towards real change. Let's use our voices and our visibility to make a difference. Because in the end, it's not just about policies; it's about people. It's about humanity. 💖 America is always a team sport.

Australia endorsed the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in 2009. Then not much happened at a Federal level. Then the UNDRIP Bill 2022 created a standalone Act that required the Prime Minister to produce and roll out “an action plan to achieve the objectives” of UNDRIP in local law, developed in consultation with First Nations peoples and the Australian Human Rights Commission, with measures applied to address racism, discrimination and combat prejudice, as well as advance mutual understanding and promote good relations. Then Juukan Gorge. Then a Federal Senate Inquiry into UNDRIP, with the final report tabled in November 2023 containing 6 recommendations: Recommendation 1 The Committee recommends the Commonwealth Government ensure its approach to developing legislation and policy on matters relating to First Nations people be consistent with the Articles outlined in UNDRIP. Recommendation 2 The Committee recommends the development of a National Action Plan, in consultation with First Nations peoples, that outlines the approach to implementing UNDRIP in Australia. Recommendation 3 The Committee recommends that any National Action Plan should consider the legislative, policy, and other approaches to implement, and assess compliance with, UNDRIP across all jurisdictions and should seek to include coordination agreements with all levels of government to maximise success. Recommendation 4 The Committee recommends the Commonwealth Government establish an independent process of truth-telling and agreement making, as requested by First Nations people, as a mechanism to support healing and assist implementation of UNDRIP. Recommendation 5 The Committee recommends the Commonwealth Government work with State and Territory Governments and non-government education institutions to develop and adopt content for all levels of education, including for new citizens, in order to enhance awareness of: > Australia’s human rights framework, including the relationship between UNDRIP and human rights covenants, > Australian history in respect to the relevance of the legal fiction of ‘terra nullius’ in facilitating the colonisation and settlement of Australia, and its impact on First Nations people, and > General civics awareness, including the functions and operations of Australian political and legal institutions. Recommendation 6 The Committee recommends the Human Rights (Parliamentary Scrutiny) Act 2011 (Cth) be amended to include UNDRIP in the definition of ‘human rights’, so that it be formally considered by the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights when scrutinising legislation. Then, in early December, a private members bill to embed UNDRIP was voted down by Parliament. Go well Ambassador for First Nations People! The journey continues, now on an international playing field. #firstnations #indigenous #aboriginal #torresstraitislander #undrip #fpic #humanrights #consent Australian Government
December 10 marked the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This significant milestone reminds us of the progress we've made and the journey that lies ahead. I am dedicated to fostering partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, ensuring First Nations perspectives, experiences and interests are heard and valued in international forums. By enhancing our participation in these global discussions, we can continue to advance Indigenous rights on a global scale.
