For single mothers this is 40 hours a week while for women in couple families with a child under 15 years this is 47 hours a week. The Governor-General, Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, today awarded 13 Australian Bravery Decorations, recognising the courageous acts of 17 Australians. The remarkable individuals named in today’s Bravery Decorations join more than 1 million Australians who have been recognised by the Australian Honours and Awards system. This year marks 50 years of our honours system and celebrates the inspirational Australians who have made a significant contribution to their community.

From 2020 to 2024, of 92 Order of Australia awards received for services in engineering, transport, building and construction, women received just 12. We want to see that number increase. Women contribute to our society in extraordinary ways every day, but they are less likely than men to have their achievements recognised with a nomination for the Order of Australia, which celebrates the outstanding achievement, service and dedication of Australians.

More and more men are taking up primary parental leave. Gender-equal uptake of paid parental leave, flexible working arrangements and other supports can reduce the barriers to taking time out of the workforce and promote shared responsibility of care. #GenderEquality #parentalleave

Professor Tom Calma AO FAA has dedicated his life to improving the lives of all Australians, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Prof Calma is a Fellow of The Australian Academy of Science, and an advocate for preserving and protecting Indigenous Knowledges. He is encouraging nominations for the new PM’s Prize for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledge Systems. ‘People should nominate colleagues, friends, people they see in the community who are deserving for this prize because what it will do is recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems.’ Nominations close 5:00 pm AEDT Tuesday 18 March 2025.

The national gender pay gap is down to 11.9% from a record-high of 18.6% a decade ago. This progress is outlined in the annual Status of Women Report Card, which highlights the latest statistics on social and economic issues affecting women and gender equality in Australia.

Communities in south-east Queensland and north-east New South Wales are experiencing severe weather, including heavy rainfall and strong winds, as Tropical Cyclone Alfred continues towards the coast. 🌀 The National Situation Room is monitoring conditions around the clock, and we are working closely with the Bureau of Meteorology, Queensland Government and NSW Government to determine what assistance they require and what Australian Government capabilities can be activated, when needed. A Crisis Coordination Team is continuing to coordinate the Australian Government's response, and NEMA liaison officers are embedded with Queensland and New South Wales emergency services. Yesterday, we convened a meeting of the National Coordination Mechanism with supermarkets and the freight sector, to help ensure the continued supply of food and other essential supplies to impacted communities. 🛒 Supermarkets in Queensland and New South Wales have advised they will continue operating as long as it is safe to do so. People in affected areas should keep checking the updates and warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology and local emergency services.
