Seasons - the different seasons in accountancy & advisory I’m writing this on a Saturday morning thinking that this may finally be the weekend we can get into the garden, to tidy it up for summer! And boy does it need it - our 3 dogs make sure they ruin our lawn & the plants & pots also need some serious TLC! It’s a never-ending battle as you can see from last summer when my lawn still looked patchy! 🙄 I’m a Spring baby & it’s definitely my favourite time of the year. It just seems to have taken longer than most years to arrive this year 🌧️☔️⛈️ In work, this is one of the most productive times too. I think we make much more progress between March - June than any other time of the year. Maybe Sept - Nov is the next best. Keeping momentum going is key to making big differences. I talked at my recent conference about tackling our ‘Elephants in the room’ whether that’s: - not having enough staff at the right levels - team members not being productive enough in the areas they should be - some more experienced staff not going out of their comfort zone to be comfortable in new areas of tech, or offering more advisory services to clients - not taking the leap to work with a new platform, service offering or consultant. Gradually improving our firms takes persistence. Regular attention but with some big leaps forward at times too. Without some brave decisions and investment, you’ll never know how large that ROI could be. And how you can transform your practice to banish those constant niggling areas which always hold you back? Is this the time of year when you can make some big leaps to change the status quo and tackle some of your elephants?

Saturday morning gardening post part 2! There is a part 2 because part 1 was not successful. And the reason it wasn’t successful is because, despite my best intentions, I got distracted & then ran out of time. And although family were coming round on Sunday, I knew we were staying inside so they wouldn’t see the garden anyway. How often do distractions stop best endeavours happening in work & life eh? However. Today, I have a more specific aim which isn’t quite as overwhelming. I want to plant up my herb wall. And I have a bigger reason. We want to eat in the garden tonight, the first time this year. So the herb wall will look pretty (& hopefully provide herbs all through the summer). Persistence will win the day. I have a specific manageable goal with an overriding reason that I understand. So I’m going back to that aim and trying again. Would you back me to finish the task today now? When you’re coaching your team and asking them to change their behaviours, especially when they’re already busy with the day job where they don’t need to go out of their comfort zone, expect a slip or two. But if you keep going with the message, and make it mean something to them, you will see gradual change. I wrote about analysing your team’s Skills & Wills recently for Capitalise. Late filing penalties apply for personal tax returns as follows: £100* penalty immediately after the due date for filing (even if there is no tax to pay or the tax due has already been paid). *The full penalty of £100 will always be due if your return is filed late even if there is no tax outstanding. Additional penalties can be charged as follows: over 3 months late – a £10 daily penalty up to a maximum of £900 over 6 months late – an additional £300 or 5% of the tax due if higher over 12 months late – a further £300 or a further 5% of the tax due if higher.
