It was such an incredible honor to be awarded a Relay Therapeutics Core Values Award at last month’s company holiday party. Looking around at the utter intelligence, drive, and talent of my coworkers, I am beyond humbled to have even been considered for this recognition. As a learning-disabled individual, this accomplishment holds special significance. As many in my network know, my scientific journey has long been an uphill battle. After being misdiagnosed with dyslexia in elementary school, I struggled all the way through undergrad to be taken seriously as a student. By that point, I was ready to accept what others let me believe about myself—that I couldn't achieve anything remarkable. But now, for the first time since I was properly diagnosed with ADD 9 years ago, given the resources I needed to be successful, and surrounded myself with colleagues, mentors, and friends who saw my potential, I no longer feel constrained by the low expectations projected onto me. And so I’d like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who got me to this point because, without their vigorous and vocal support, I may very well have ended up giving up on my scientific aspirations a long time ago. Taking a Bold Step: From PR to Empowering People with Epilepsy! ⚡️ Hi everyone, I'm Vijin, and I'm excited to share a big career transition! After years in the dynamic world of public relations, I'm turning my passion for advocacy and communication towards a deeply personal mission: empowering people living with epilepsy and fostering broader public and professional understanding. This decision stems from my own experiences and those of others in the epilepsy community. We often face stigma, misinformation, and a lack of resources. I believe knowledge is power, and open communication is key to breaking down barriers. 🌟 June is Aphasia Awareness Month! 🌟 As a dedicated speech pathologist with a private practice, I am passionate about raising awareness for aphasia and supporting those affected by this often misunderstood condition. Aphasia is a communication disorder that results from damage to parts of the brain that are responsible for language. It can impact speaking, understanding, reading, and writing, making everyday communication a significant challenge. Why is raising awareness so crucial? Understanding and Empathy: Increasing public knowledge about aphasia fosters empathy and understanding. People with aphasia often face social isolation due to communication barriers. By educating our communities, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment. Advocacy and Support: Awareness initiatives empower advocacy efforts. By raising our voices, we can influence policy changes, increase funding for research, and improve access to resources and support services for those living with aphasia. Empowering Individuals and Families: Knowledge is power. When individuals and families understand aphasia, they are better equipped to manage the condition and utilize effective communication strategies to improve quality of life. This Aphasia Awareness Month, let's work together to spread the word, break down the stigma, and support those impacted by aphasia. Share information, engage in conversations, and join the movement to create a more understanding and inclusive world for everyone affected by aphasia. It feels surreal to be making this announcement, FINALLY. When I say finally, I mean the project I’ve officially worked on for the past year has been living in my head and heart for a decade. If you know me personally or professionally you’ve likely heard me speak on the power of community. 👩🏿🤝👩🏻 Community got me through NP school with a toddler in tow. 👨🏽🤝👨🏿 Community helped me act in response to the profound effects systemic racism has on our world. Yes, the many studies and staggering statistics helped, but it is real people that support me in working through internalized racism, unlearning, learning, and growing in the way we all must when creating change. 👨🏽🤝👨🏿 Community organizing got me through feelings of rage and hopelessness in the face of so much world injustice (full disclosure—not FULLY through this one). 👩🏿🤝👩🏻 Online community got me through my son’s leukemia diagnosis while working full time mid-pandemic, something I could write many posts about. My point is any time I’ve ever had to do, learn, or face something hard, community— collective care, has gotten me through. Healthcare providers across specialties (doulas, nurses, doctors, mental health therapists, acupuncturists, etc), are facing incredible amounts of burnout and moral injury. As providers we both experience and perpetuate a great deal of harm. It is time we recognize that this is driven by the same systemic issues that fuel the health inequities we see. The mass exodus of providers and abysmal Black maternal health rates, are different sides of the same oppressive coin. Here is my response: Togather. Gratitude. It's crazy how it can overwhelm you in the toughest of times. Healthcare can be tough. Rising costs, reimbursement cuts, staffing shortages. It's so easy to get wrapped up in the "funk". In the chaos. It's easy to lose sight of what's important. Recently I've been questioning my career path. Was I meant to be a Physical Therapist? Am I supposed to be in management? What is my path?!? Where am I headed?!? And then... in a span of less than 24 hours, my staff of outpatient Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants potentially saved two lives. Very different situations, but with an excellent emergency response plan, incredible teamwork, and a proactive approach to red flags picked up during medical screening we potentially saved two lives. Gratitude... For my team. For my education. For my path. Gratitude that we get to change lives every single day. It's not always easy, but man.... it sure is worth it.
