Ontario needs nurses and has been actively recruiting experienced nurses to immigrate through the Ontario Provincial Nominee Program. But once in Ontario, internationally-educated nurses find it difficult to work as a nurse. A new World Education Services survey reveals that process barriers have inhibited people from registration. Costs of registration, an unclear and/or long timeline, and recent practice requirements are common challenges. This suggests a clear need to reduce complexity so it is easier and faster for internationally-educated nurses to register and begin working in the province.
New findings! A WES survey of internationally educated #nurses (IENs) not working as nurses in #Ontario shows that, among those who are employed, 19% are in roles that make no use of their nursing skills or experience. Our new #CountingOnCare report highlights key findings and policy implications around the underemployment of #internationally educated nurses. Today is International Nurses Day 2024. This years theme is The Economic Power of Care. A demand to invest more in nursing. International Nurses Day is celebrated on 12 May each year, to coincide with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, and since 1988 has been given a theme by the ICN. This theme was chosen to highlight the need for nursing to be seen as an investment, instead of a cost, and to “reshape” perceptions of nursing’s economic and societal benefits. “Despite being the backbone of healthcare, nursing often faces financial constraints and societal undervaluation” Many of our staff have come from this public sector healthcare position within the mental health service and know only too well how stretched and in demand these roles are. #nurses #internationalnursesday #powerofcare

Nurses are not backbones of any hospital. Nurses are professionals who deserve great terms and conditions of work. These euphemisms, from "heroes" , "angels" to "backbones" are what obscure the fundamental role of a nurse to vague false equivalents. I do not mind appreciation, I care though for accurate representation of who a nurse is. Truth be told, not many people in the public know. Curiously, even nurses themselves often flounder when it comes to accurately describing their roles hence resorting to "backbones" and other fine-sounding catchphrases. Disruptive ideas drive change. Familiarity breeds complacency. Have a lovely weekend. #nursesonlinkedin #nursing #nurseideas #latenighthoughts
