Hostile architecture has always disgusted me. In the US, there’s evidence that backs this up; cities there are spending more on criminalising and displacing rough sleepers than it costs to house them. “Sweeps, incarceration, enforcement of anti-panhandling laws and hostile architecture, after all, come with a hefty price tag estimated to be more than $31,000 per person, per year,” reports Jacobin. “The annual cost of providing supportive housing, according to the same analysis, is $10,051 – or less than a third of the cost of criminalisation.” https://lnkd.in/eG3QdfF2

Professionals come forward. Architecture licensing should requires atleast two years apprenticeship and authority make sure the deal should go well. Secondly, architect’s education should be world class and hire highly trained educators. The third point should follow below.

The controversial Charlemont Drive, St Andrew apartment complex constructed by Mark Barnett, president of the state-owned National Water Commission, his wife Annette, and developer Phillip Smith."The 2018 Building Act, Section 18 requires... all applications to be accompanied by 'building design and plans' and the certification application by a 'building professional.' In the case of'small building work' (below 300 square meters), a 'building practitioner' may apply, except if the work is complex," I noted in my response to the question, "KSAMC should abide by the building act." Was 11 Charlemont Drive the result of the work of a professional building team? Why not, if not? In order to promote national awareness, the KSAMC is required under the 2018 Building Act to incorporate this response in their report. (Patricia Green, PhD, a registered architect)

It is good to see this nationwide programme of school rebuilds following the RAAC crisis is underway with this contract win for BAM Construction and Ryder Architecture. Last September, Emma Greenland, our Education Sector lead, wrote a short piece highlighting the key acoustic considerations that should be given to projects requiring improvement works including:- >When replacing RAAC roofing slabs, a replacement lightweight roof needs to be checked to ensure environmental noise ingress (for schools near to airports for example), rain noise and fixed plant noise ingress is not going to be an issue, and sound insulation of walls is not compromised by transmission via the partition head. >Replacement ceilings need to include fixed or suspended sound absorption and/or acoustic wall panels in order to achieve good control of reverberation time and hence suitable listening conditions for all students, but particularly those with: - Special Hearing and Communication Needs - English as an additional Language, - younger children, - Social Emotional and Mental Health Needs (SEMH) and AD/HD - SLCN, Language Impairment and even Dyslexia If your school is affected by the RAAC crisis, or you happen to be involved with the refurbishment of one, we can offer advice to check the potential impact of alternative facilities and upgrade schemes on acoustics and listening in schools.
