Where the environmental footprint of aviation is a concern, Usher AI saves >200kg of CO2 emissions per flight by improving the efficiency of airport ground movements. To make it concrete: this is half the CO2 footprint of a passenger going from Amsterdam to Rome... #ASMGCS has proven to save 20% in emissions (1) during taxiing. With the average fuel consumption during taxiing at London Heathrow conservatively set at 337 liters based on data from OAG (2) and one liter equal to 3,16kg of CO2 emissions (3), the savings equal a little over 200 kilos per movement. And would double (!) in limited visibility operations. Where the Usher concept provides a further improvement in the efficiency of ground operations relative to 'Follow-the-Greens', its savings will also be higher - both in terms of CO2 and costs. For the business case the benefit is dependent on carbon price. With the costs predominantly above 80 euro per tonne over the last two years, the savings amount to $10 per flight. Where the savings for an airport thus easily amount to millions per year, the savings of CO2 emissions to society are even more valuable. Conrac Solutions’ Vice President, Operations, Scott Anderson was amped to share his key takeaways of attending Global Transmission Report’s first conference on Airport Electrification. The conference provided energy management teams from across the country a chance to discuss challenges faced with reducing greenhouse gas emissions and their resourceful approaches to solutions. San Francisco International Airport is actively reducing its environmental impact by shifting from natural gas to electricity through infrastructure upgrades and tenant electrification mandates. Their objectives include a 25% reduction in energy usage from 2013 (14% accomplished last year), a 50% cut in carbon emissions from 1990 levels (reached 41% by 2022) and diverting 90% of waste from landfills (currently at 61%). Electrification is becoming an increasingly important part of shifting from the industrial-era strategies for satisfying energy demands that have contributed to environmental impact on a global scale. The methods for achieving the goal will require a commitment to carbon reduction that is specifically tailored to each region and project. The conference provided an excellent platform to explore current and future airport and airport-related electrification pursuits.
