Edmond Scientific to Develop AI-Driven Autonomous Robots to Support Veteran Healthcare Edmond Scientific won a significant contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA) to research, design, develop, test, and field two different types of autonomous systems throughout the VHA. The 5-year program, referred to as the “Autonomous Caregiver Robotics” program, aims to develop autonomous systems to support two different use cases. The use cases may be in support of high impact hospital tasks such as automatic distribution of equipment or prescriptions, home health monitoring and remote sensing, rehabilitation for neuromuscular skills, assistance with mobility or daily tasks, or other needs as defined by an analysis of the veteran/patient, caregiver, and provider populations. The technical effort combines artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) with computer vision, sensors, robotics and automation, and mechanical and electrical design and fabrication (MCAD/ECAD) capabilities to support rapid prototyping to produce various proofs of concept and prototypes for testing before fielding final systems. I'm excited to share that our paper, "A Review on the Form and Complexity of Human-Robot Interaction in the Evolution of Autonomous Surgery," has been published in Advanced Intelligent Systems. As robotics and intelligence increasingly integrate into surgery, the pivotal role of human-robot interaction (HRI) in surgical procedures and outcomes becomes evident. However, debate rages over whether increasing robot autonomy will result in less human involvement. Some scholars assert that autonomy will reduce human participation, whereas others contend it will result in more complex interactions. To reveal the role of HRI in the evolution of autonomous surgery, this review systematically explores the HRI of robotic surgery with various levels of autonomy. The HRI is examined from both robotic science and clinical practice perspectives, incorporating relevant case studies. Two key components, intention detection and situation awareness, are especially concerned with a brief description of the interfaces and control strategies they rely on. Additional insights are drawn from analogous technologies in aviation, industrial robotics, and autonomous vehicles. The analysis suggests that HRI complexity tends to increase as the robot transitions from no autonomy to conditional autonomy and is predicted to subsequently decrease with a substantial shift in the interaction form when moving toward full autonomy. It is concluded by highlighting challenges from technical and clinical perspectives and delineating research trends in this rapidly evolving field. For more info, please visit:

Robots at Work at CES panel replay I recently had the privilege of moderating an insightful CES panel spotlighting real-world robotics use cases interacting with the public daily. Speakers from pioneering autonomous vehicle, surgical, and AI companies shared key perspectives on safely deploying robots while solving challenges facing consumers and businesses alike. The crucial theme underscoring discussions was earning vital public trust for robotics through rigorous failsafe protocols that prioritize safety. This ensures cutting-edge automation also thoughtfully serves societal needs versus prioritizing progress above ethics.   Self-Driving Cars Must Prove Themselves Safe Before Widespread Adoption Laura Major, CTO of driverless ridesharing firm Motional, noted how robots replacing human drivers can prevent countless accidents. However, the vehicles must first demonstrate capability of handling roads without catastrophic failures. Motional undergoes extensive testing across billions of simulated miles to validate reliability before expanding pilots. “Our goal is improving overall road safety...we can prevent many fatalities happening daily with human drivers,” Major explained, citing flaws like distraction. “But safety is an important part of our development process too.” It underscored how pioneering autonomous technology must put safety first before reforming entrenched mobility norms.   Surgical Robots Excel At Following Physician Instructions With Precision Quantum Surgical CEO Bertin Nahum then outlined surgical robots optimizing patient outcomes by flawlessly executing treatment plans. Whereas even talented surgeons endure occasional human limitations, robots never waver when performing repetitive procedures or precise incisions. “Robotics is going to help physicians perform exactly whichever plan was done,” Nahum said. “Once upon a time, no matter the accuracy in planning, whichever treatment had to be done [manually]." It highlighted robotics removing gaps between physician expertise and execution - improving care quality as robots enable new therapeutic capabilities.   AI Simulation and Generative Models Set to Unlock Robotics Potential Finally, Gerard Andrews of Nvidia discussed leveraging AI to accelerate future robotics breakthroughs. Specifically, he cited using generative models like DALL-E to quickly create realistic 3D simulations for testing robot software, designs, and workflows rather than manual coding. “The intersection of generative AI and robotics will be absolutely transformational,” Andrews predicted, noting gains in development velocity. “Robotics engineers will have a ‘force multiplier’ with generative AI and their ability to run simulations.”
