Director at Zulu Joint Integrity & Training Ltd. IMechE Education & Skills Strategy Board Member. IMechE Process Industries Division Board Member (oil gas & chemical committee).
Who remembers this word? Sadly it's something that is seldom used in industry these days and it's no wonder why - there are no where near enough 4 year indentured engineering apprenticeships in our UK process industries. From my biased mechanical background; for example the ability to strip a muti-stage pump in the workshop, take all the necessary checks and readings, re-machine or re-make parts on a lathe or milling machine, rebuild, test and re-install/align on site is a skill that is sadly in decline. The skills and competency that builds over a structured engineering apprenticeship cannot be replicated in short term 'learning' programmes. Fitter/Turners, Pipe Fitters, Mechanical Fitters, Coded Welders - There's a place for academia in all of this but we desperately need 'hands on' craftsmen and women. For us to support our existing industries and to successfully build our future nuclear, carbon capture and hydrogen network projects we MUST invest NOW. We should have invested over the last thirty years, but instead there's been a steady decline - if we mix this with an ageing workforce and of course the existing skills gap, then we are setting ourselves up for disaster. We've all felt the pain during maintenance turnaround events. The carpet fitters, taxi drivers and butchers are beginning to outnumber the competent workers. I know it, you know it... Friday morning we will be waking up to a new Government* it seems - I only hope that they pick up the baton and drive our skills shortage problem across the UK. Many of us have said it during recent IMechE Process Industries Division events; we need a focused approach to the UK skills shortage. A number of round table events consisting of asset owners, contractor companies, institutions, regulatory bodies, training providers - addressing the reality and working together for the greater good. How can we make this happen? I'm always open to suggestions. How To Become an Ironworker: 6 Steps Ironworking can be a rewarding career with real-world results, as ironworkers can help build skyscrapers, highways and bridges that are part of everyday life. If you want to be an ironworker, learning a career path can help you reach your career goals. In this article, we explain what an ironworker is, an ironworker's duties, how to become an ironworker and tips for aspiring ironworkers. Key takeaways: Ironworkers are skilled tradespeople who manipulate iron and steel in construction projects, such as buildings, bridges and roads. Aspiring ironworkers earn a high school diploma or GED credential and complete a four-year apprenticeship working under the supervision of an experienced ironworker. Essential skills for ironworkers include welding, blueprint interpretation, workplace safety and heavy machinery operation. What is an ironworker? An ironworker is a tradesperson who cuts, welds, builds and places structural iron and steel in buildings, roads and bridges. Their work reinforces structures to improve their safety and durability. Some ironworkers specialize in an area of ironworking, while others perform a variety of tasks on the job. There are two levels for ironworkers in the U.S.: Apprentice: An apprentice ironworker can start with no knowledge of ironworking and learn the required trade skills to become a journeyman ironworker in a paid apprenticeship. Journeyman: An apprentice ironworker must pass an exam to become a journeyman. Journeyman ironworkers can work independently for higher pay than an apprentice. Additionally, there are several sectors of ironworking where you can contribute your skills: Welding: Welding uses heat to bind pieces of metal together in ornamental, structural, reinforcement and rigging. Ornamental: Ornamental ironworking, also called "architectural ironworking," can involve building stairs, railing, elevator doors, windows and other architectural structures in a building. Structural: Structural ironworkers make frameworks with prefabricated metal by placing and joining metals to form the skeleton of a project. Reinforcement: A reinforcing ironworker, also called a "rodbuster," uses a framework to create structures using reinforcing bars. Machinery moving: Machinery moving and rigging ironworkers can operate heavy machinery to move structural steel, curtain walls and other metals to the desired areas of a construction site. #ironworkerwelder #welder #smaw #fcaw #ironworkers #ironworker #weldersunitedra #yourweldingcoach #welding #careers #jobs Ironworker Vs Welder https://lnkd.in/gh8JYNuA Indeed: https://lnkd.in/g_jEZwFz

Interesting post recently from Martyn Fletcher, Chair of the Welding Trailblazer, re a revision to the Level 2 - General Welder standard(v1.0 & 1.1). Martyn highlighted the need to update the assessment plan, as some organisations have strayed from the official EPA criteria, particularly in respect of the requirement for 2 welded pieces. This has been done to ensure the correct level of Destructive / Mechanical testing is conducted on apprentice practical tests. The Trailblazer Group have now changed the wording to state that welds must be tested – thankfully, something EngEPA have been fully compliant with for years. The apprentices we have assessed are at no risk of any further investigation from the regulatory body for non-adherence to the assessment criteria.
