Interesting two days at the APPRAISE project final event, where we discussed, among other topics, the importance of public-private partnerships, training, and respect for fundamental rights and freedoms while effectively securing and protecting public spaces from terrorist attacks.

As we celebrate Independence Day, it's fascinating to look back at the forms of communication used during the Revolutionary War. The fife and bugle corps played a crucial role in relaying commands and boosting morale on the battlefield. Additionally, cryptographic written messages were utilized to send secret information between commanders, highlighting the importance of secure communication even in the 18th century. Fast forward to today, and we see the legacy of cryptography in modern technology. Algorithms, encryption keys, and other advances continue to protect our digital communication and data privacy. The principles developed during the Revolutionary War still resonate in our cybersecurity measures today. Happy Independence Day! In a public conference on space, a notable senior defense leader used the phrase “Battlestar Galactica” to refer to large, expensive legacy systems. This is often used in a negative context. Like the things we have are “Battlestar Galacticas” but what we need is a hyper agile, networked, fully integrated system-of-systems providing joint all domain command and control and driving decision advantage through multi-sensor fusion and adaptive capacity with Agile resiliency to advance the operational initiative of integrated forces. But the entire plot of the television show “Battlestar Galactica” (2004) is that an AI-powered robot civilization penetrated the network and disabled all of humankind’s defensive capabilities in a single, massive, coordinated cyber attack. And the only thing that’s left is the crusty old Battlestar Galactica that wasn’t connected to the network.

The Caesar Cipher Did you know? One of the earliest and simplest methods of encryption was used by Julius Caesar to protect his military communications. This method, known as the Caesar Cipher, involves shifting each letter in a message by a fixed number of positions in the alphabet. For example, with a shift of 3: A becomes D B becomes E C becomes F To encrypt the word "HELLO" with a shift of 3, it becomes "KHOOR". To decrypt the message, you simply shift the letters back by 3 positions to reveal the original text. While the Caesar Cipher is not secure by today's standards, it laid the foundation for modern cryptography!

Civil society organizations champion human rights and democracy, but they're increasingly targeted by sophisticated cyber actors and linked to authoritarian regimes. In this inaugural Strategic Dialogue, we, along with governments from Australia, Canada, Estonia, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, and the UK, discussed strategies to enhance civil society's cybersecurity. If you have an emotional reaction to information, you are being manipulated. That's how information warfare works. Instead, think rationally about who benefits from that emotional reaction. Sometimes it is more than click bait. Don't focus on the movement of pawns, instead understand why the hand moves them. While AI systems should not replace legal professionals, AI will be transformative and nation-defining. 💡 Integral to the reform of civil procedure and the rules on evidence would be to allow for admissibility challenges (as against AI-powered evidence) well in advance of the trial, to avoid off-the-cuff rulings on admissibility.
