Africa Sustainability Matters (ASM)’s Post

Africa has its own unique challenges, and innovation here is born out of necessity. One shining example is how we have reimagined access to clean energy. Solar power is the obvious solution to our energy challenges. The sun shines abundantly across the continent, offering limitless potential for renewable energy. Yet for many, the high upfront cost of solar systems has been a significant barrier. But does that mean we should remain stuck in the past, relying on polluting and expensive energy sources? No. We innovate. African countries have widely embraced the pay-as-you-go (PAYG) solar model, a solution that is as practical as it is revolutionary.  Instead of requiring families to pay the full cost of a solar system upfront, companies like M-KOPA (Kenya), Bboxx (Rwanda), and ZOLA Electric (Tanzania) allow customers to make a small deposit and pay for the system in affordable installments, often through mobile money platforms like Safaricom PLC's Mpesa. This approach is transformative because it meets people where they are. It acknowledges that many African households may not have the means to afford a solar system all at once but can manage smaller, consistent payments. By adapting to the realities of our communities, the PAYG solar model does more than provide clean energy; it empowers people to improve their quality of life on their terms. This is what sustainability should do: solve real problems in ways that work for the people and communities it serves. Is Pay as you go solar the key to unlocking Africa’s renewable energy potential?
