I just got off from a Business Master Class hosted by Standard Bank South Africa in Partnership with Giving Wings SA. These are the Key Take Aways: 1. In business, it’s important to maintain a healthy balance between ambition and realism. 2. While it’s tempting to take on every opportunity that comes your way, it’s crucial to remember that biting off more than you can chew can lead to overwhelm, burnout, and ultimately, less success. 3. Successful businesses know how to say “no” to projects that are not a good fit or are outside their capacity. They recognize that taking on too much can stretch resources thin and cause quality to suffer. 4. In today’s business, it’s easy to lose sight of the importance of balance. Yet, it’s precisely this balance that allows businesses to succeed. 5. Taking on too much can lead to missed deadlines, unsatisfied customers, and ultimately, a negative impact on your reputation. 6. Slow and steady wins the race. It’s better to do a few things really well than to try to do everything and end up doing nothing well. 7. Being disciplined in business can have a massive impact on success. 8. It starts with setting clear, measurable goals and creating an action plan to achieve them. A disciplined businessperson sticks to that plan, no matter what distractions or obstacles arise. They know that the road to success isn’t always smooth, and they understand that it requires consistent, persistent effort. 9. Disciplined business owners are able to prioritize tasks, delegate responsibilities, and make tough decisions that align with their goals. 10. Together with my colleague L'Hon./Hon. Amina GERBA, M.B.A., C.Q.🇨🇦, I’m pleased to publish a report on the progress on Black entrepreneurship initiatives in Canada. I believe that our collective economic prosperity lies in unlocking the entrepreneurial and innovative strength of our diverse entrepreneurs. Why? Because entrepreneurs are the wealth creators in society, and we have half as many entrepreneurs as we did 20 years ago (https://lnkd.in/eh3ucP4f.) This most recent study builds from baseline survey work that was completed in cooperation with the African Canadian Senate Group in 2021 (https://lnkd.in/eg5fzNqe). There has been some promising progress in the support and success of Black entrepreneurs over the past 2-3 years, but collective efforts need be sustained, evidence-driven, and targeted to effectively address systemic barriers faced by Black entrepreneurs. As the focus on Africa intensifies, I had the privilege of granting an interview with the Financial Times, discussing the work Henley Business School has been doing in West Africa with Young Entrepreneurs and our approach. With over 500 young people and counting going through our different business and management programs, the mission remains to build the people that will build the businesses that will build Africa. We're privileged to have Adeyinka Adewale, PhD teach our Techpreneurs at Semicolon. Every time he visits us to teach a course on entrepreneurship and business leadership we get feedback about how his sessions were inspiring, informative, and sometimes life-changing. The picture he shared below is actually from one of our first techpreneurship cohorts, a few years ago... I can spot a few people who are now founders or in leadership roles at some of our most innovative local companies. I think it is apt that the Financial Times highlighted his work, and I completely agree with his remarks in the article linked below. Partnerships between European business schools and local companies like Semicolon can drive important linkages and empower the local ecosystem, but it is important that these programs are grounded in a deep understanding of local context and challenges. This local understanding, and access to amazing facilitators like Dr. Adeyinka, provide value to our work through Semicolon's Techpreneurship program and the joint Nexus Plus program for early-stage founders.
