Failure to Embrace Failure: Is This Africa’s Entrepreneurial Roadblock? Africa is undoubtedly home to some of the most dynamic entrepreneurs—visionaries who continue to create African solutions for global problems. Yet, the journey of entrepreneurship, often marked by failure as much as success, remains stigmatized across the continent. Culturally, failure is viewed as a blemish, something to be avoided at all costs. But in a space where risks define growth, can we afford this mindset? As Melvyn Lubega pointed out during our conversation at the 2023 All African Business Leaders Awards , we too often dissect the success of our peers with skepticism rather than celebrating their achievements. His analogy rings true: “We continue to fight over who has the biggest sandcastle on the beach, while our peers build skyscrapers on the beachfront.” This raises crucial questions: Is our reluctance to embrace failure hindering innovation and growth? And in a continent teeming with potential, how do we move from competition to collaboration—building skyscrapers together rather than isolated castles? What are your thoughts on how failure and competition are shaping the entrepreneurial landscape in your country?

Who best to share the challenges in accessing capital, as we seek to scale our businesses than our own business community? Thank you to LBAN/Latino Business Action Network for inviting me to the table and to the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco president and staff for listening to our stories. I always leave these types of events inspired by my fellow business leaders, their resiliency and resolve to advance our community. #Inflation is toxic indeed, and small businesses, in our case Latino owned businesses already deal with marked barriers to financing in contrast to white owned businesses. There is #data to support this. Conversations like these, mean agencies that set economic policy can hear directly from those affected. In my case, I was also able to share the struggle of fellow #movers. I have heard first hand from owners, executives and workers in the industry, how #mortgage rates have affected residential moving. Who wants to give up their 3% mortgage rate for 8% or higher? 📊📈 We are more than data points on a graph, we are 62 Million Latinos in the US and if we were a country, our $3.2T #GDP would be the fifth largest economy, (Larger than UK, France, Spain, Italy and India). Let’s unlock the power of Latino owned businesses by continuing to engage in productive conversations with policymakers and by holding our elected officials to a higher standard. We need to continue to demand equity in access to economic opportunities. It is not only good for us, it is good for the entire US economy, it is good for ALL Americans! Read more about this: Latina owned businesses have the lowest approval rates for business loans from local and national banks, with only 39% approval on average from both local and national banks. Latino owned tech businesses have 28% approval rates for the original amount from local banks and 40% from national banks. https://lnkd.in/g9kCQRBW Mauricio Simbeck Maria Jose Palacio Diana Manriquez Daniel Gonzalez #monetarypolicy #LBANstrong #latinosintheus #businessowners #movers #licensedmovers #colma #westsacramento #sacramento #california #southsanfrancisco #latinoentrepreneurship #stanfordgsb #housing
Last Monday, we had the honor of meeting with Mary C. Daly, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. President Daly had previously joined us as a fireside chat speaker with Stanford University President Jon Levin at our 2021 State of Latino Entrepreneurship (SOLE) Summit at Stanford! During our Monday meeting, we shared some of our research findings. We discussed the challenges, often external, that Latina and Latino entrepreneurs face and the enormous opportunity they represent for the U.S. economy. President Daly was eager to hear from Latino business owners and understand how their experiences may influence monetary policy. #LBANstrong #LatinoBusinesss #FederalReserveBank #MonetaryPolicy #LatinoEntrepreneurship #BusinessOwners #StanfordGSB

Together with my colleague L'Hon./Hon. Amina GERBA, M.B.A., C.Q.🇨🇦, I’m pleased to publish a report on the progress on Black entrepreneurship initiatives in Canada. I believe that our collective economic prosperity lies in unlocking the entrepreneurial and innovative strength of our diverse entrepreneurs. Why? Because entrepreneurs are the wealth creators in society, and we have half as many entrepreneurs as we did 20 years ago (https://lnkd.in/eh3ucP4f.) This most recent study builds from baseline survey work that was completed in cooperation with the African Canadian Senate Group in 2021 (https://lnkd.in/eg5fzNqe). There has been some promising progress in the support and success of Black entrepreneurs over the past 2-3 years, but collective efforts need be sustained, evidence-driven, and targeted to effectively address systemic barriers faced by Black entrepreneurs. We must continue identifying best practices and effective strategies to foster a truly inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem. #InclusiveEntrepreneurship #WealthCreation #SkillsDevelopment #Mentoring #Procurement #Succession #Entrepreneurship #Entrepreneurs #Mentorship

3moIf resilience had a name, it would most likely be Nelson Mandela. How does a person spend 27 years in prison and then lead his country through the most difficult transition? A visit to Robben Island provided me with a sense of what the period of captivity must have been like: complete (or perhaps not so complete, if you consider the smuggled manuscripts) isolation from the outside world.
