DYK: MSMEs represent 80 percent of Africa's businesses, while the circular economy in Africa has the potential to generate 11 million jobs. To encourage innovative #CircularEconomy solutions that foster sustainable and inclusive growth, the African Development Bank-supported AfriCircular Innovators Program will provide finance and technical assistance to 30 small and medium enterprises from Cote d’Ivoire, #Ghana and #Rwanda. Ndintambwe Feeds Limited, a Rwandan company that produces affordable animal feeds using insects and maggots as an environmentally-friendly alternative to soybean and fishmeal, is one of the selected businesses. “As an SME, we face numerous challenges. The biggest ones include limited financial capacity to fully implement our project, and the lack of required skills to sustain a profitable recycling business without harming the environment," said founder, Jean Bosco Nshutiyimana, at a virtual onboarding event. Koumbem Fatou Emilienne, representative of Siboré Luxury Hair, another beneficiary, said, “Joining AfriCircular's Innovators Program offers a valuable opportunity for Siboré Luxury Hair, aligned with our commitment to sustainability. Through this program, we will benefit from the expertise and resources needed to optimise our production processes, and reduce waste and improve energy efficiency. Financial support and access to cutting-edge technologies will strengthen our production capacity and positive environmental impact.” Details: https://bit.ly/4fTc8xZ

Kim-Fay East Africa, a leading manufacturer and distributor of hygiene, tissue, and home care products, has secured debt funding from the Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries (Norfund) and I&M Bank Ltd Bank to support its regional expansion. This investment will enhance Kim-Fay’s capabilities in providing affordable tissue paper to lower-income segments across East Africa. The funding, supported by advisory services from I&M Burbidge Capital Limited (IMBC), will be directed towards the construction of a new recycled paper manufacturing facility in Tatu City, Ruiru. This facility, expected to become operational by 2025, will utilize locally-sourced wastepaper, reinforcing Kim-Fay’s commitment to sustainability and cost-effective production. Kim-Fay’s expansion comes at a time of increasing demand for tissue and hygiene products due to rising consumer hygiene awareness and expanding middle classes. Euromonitor International notes that high inflation in 2023 has shifted consumer preferences towards more affordable brands, intensifying competition in the market. Norfund's East Africa Director, William Nyaoke, emphasized that the project aligns with their mandate to support sustainable enterprises and job creation in developing economies. The collaboration with I&M Bank represents a strategic investment in Kim-Fay’s growth and the development of a state-of-the-art wastepaper recycling facility. #KimFayEastAfrica #DebtFunding #RegionalExpansion #SustainableManufacturing #HygieneProducts #Investment #TissuePaper #EastAfrica #BusinessGrowth To read more: https://zurl.co/IZmY

I am looking forward to speak at the upcoming 3rd International Forum for Transformation of African Cotton, Textiles & Accessories (FICOTA) on July 9-12 in beautiful Kribi Beach, Cameroon! 🙌 🌱 👕 Cotton is the world’s most abundantly produced natural fiber, with farmers from over 100 countries producing about 26 million metric tons annually. In Africa, this vital crop is predominantly cultivated by smallholder farmers, making it a crucial element of the continent's agricultural landscape. FICOTA is an African initiative dedicated to improving the infrastructure and performance of the cotton value chain, textiles, and accessories. It also focuses on enhancing processing methods to boost productivity and the quality of goods and services. The theme of the event is "WHITE GOLD REVOLUTION: RESHAPING AFRICA THROUGH SUSTAINABLE COTTON AND TEXTILES". 🤝 FICOTA collaborates with multilateral partners like bizpando AG to drive economic progress through supply chain enhancement and development within the cotton textile industry. The forum brings together stakeholders from the private, public, and non-profit sectors, as well as governmental agencies, to foster innovative solutions and partnerships. 📣 Stay tuned for my session where I will be discussing Africa’s advantage of supply chain adjustments through compliance requirements. I look forward to share insights and engage with other attendees on the future of sustainable cotton and textiles in Africa. 🌍Thrilled to share my experience at the Textile Waste Art Exhibition & Workshop by Afthonia at Alliance Française(Mike Adenuga Centre)! Led by Yomi Odutola & the Afthonia team. The event showcased the power of circular economy through recycling & upcycling textile waste, featuring inspiring artworks from students at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, a practical on recycling and a workshop on recycling and upcycling! 🔄 Emphasizing the importance of fostering a circular economy to promote sustainable consumption & production patterns, the event perfectly aligns with SDG 12 - Ensuring Sustainable Consumption and Production. Africa, including Nigeria, faces significant challenges in this regard. In the latest SDGs ranking, Nigeria scored 146th out of 166, with only 54.27% of goals achieved, highlighting the urgent need for action. 🌱 As we strive to build a more sustainable future, initiatives like those led by Afthonia are pivotal. Let's advocate for responsible consumption, reduce waste, and embrace innovative solutions. Together, we can create positive change! #SDG12 #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Afthonia #Advocacy
