The Africa Climate Summit 2023 marked a turning point, leading to the creation of the Nairobi Declaration, which underscores the urgent need for comprehensive action against climate change. Sustainable infrastructure is essential for long-term resilience, and financial investments are crucial for building systems that not only withstand climate impacts but also promote economic growth and community well-being. Your voice matters! On November 4th, we will hold a deep-dive reflection to assess Kenya’s progress in implementing the ACS outcomes related to adaptation. This includes reviewing efforts to scale up adaptation finance, advance locally-led climate actions, and promote sustainable agricultural practices among other innovative approaches to enhance resilience against climate shocks. Join us for ACS@ONE, the first CSO-led deep dive reflections on key thematic areas one year after the inaugural Africa Climate Summit 2023. Did you know that in 2024, Kenya is projected to waste about 30% of its food? This staggering statistic highlights a critical issue in our food systems. In this episode of #GreenJobsAfrica, we shine a light on Foodcloud Kenya, founded by Anthony Maina. This organization is dedicated to tackling food waste surplus from farmers while addressing food security challenges across the nation. Earlier this year, Jacob’s Ladder Africa partnered with the Government Of Makueni County to transform the future of young entrepreneurs through the Climate Intrapreneurship Development Program. The initiative focused on empowering youth with critical skills in agribusiness, with a special emphasis on aquaculture in Makueni sub-counties. Targeting youth categorized under NEET (Not in Employment, Education, or Training)—a group often sidelined in economic development—this program has provided a lifeline. These young individuals are trained not only to build green businesses but also to become climate champions within their communities, generating green jobs while combating the impacts of climate change. Through hands-on capacity building, they have gained sustainable aquaculture and business development skills while also undergoing a profound mindset shift to advocate for sustainability and the green economy. The results have been inspiring—our first cohort of beneficiaries has experienced transformative change, evolving into empowered citizens driving positive environmental impact. At Jacob’s Ladder Africa, our mission is to activate 30 million green jobs in the green economy by the year 2033. If you share our vision of a sustainable and inclusive future, we invite you to join us as we drive transformative change across counties. Together, we can unlock Africa’s green economy and empower the next generation of leaders to shape a brighter future for the continent. During #UNGA79 this year, JLA took the stage in New York with two impactful side events. First up, Climate and Leadership: Green Jobs for Africa, co-hosted with Columbia University’s Climate School, where leaders, innovators, and changemakers gathered to explore how leadership can unlock the potential of green jobs on the continent. Next, Pathways Beyond Net Zero: Harnessing the Bioeconomy for Climate Action in partnership with The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, focused on shaping a nature-positive, green economy. Discussions highlighted sustainable production of bio-based products, rethinking consumption, and embracing circular, regenerative practices across industries.
