YALI NETWORK ABUJA CALLS FOR INTENSIFIED YOUTH ACTION IN DEMANDING ACCOUNTABILITY IN GOVERNANCE AS A PATHWAY TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. ABUJA, NIGERIA. 24/01/2024. In a recent radio interview held as a media component for the "Catalyzing Youth Actions for Accountability in Governance" project of GreenLight Initiative supported by the Nigeria Youths Futures fund and LEAP Africa, Mr Yakub ONIMODE, a representative of the YALI Network Abuja, emphasized on the need for accountability measures in ensuring sustainable development within communities. The conversation highlighted the power of individuals, using technology and social media in advocating for open governance and transparency. Mr. Onimode highlighted the grassroots approach to accountability by encouraging citizens to actively engage with local projects. He also urged individuals to inquire about the funding projects and leverage social media to share updates on their findings. In addressing challenges in implementing accountability measures, Mr. Onimode pinpointed issues of dishonesty and unintentional governance. He emphasized the need for elected officials to stay connected with the daily experiences of the people they represent and suggested a review of immunity clauses to reduce the concentration of powers and a re-evaluation of constitutions and related documents to ensure they align with the needs and aspirations of the people. When asked about how individuals can actively participate in promoting accountability, Mr. Onimode underscored the role of technology and association. He urged citizens to join or form associations addressing specific community needs, citing examples like the Young African Leaders Initiative Network in Abuja. He encouraged individuals to be intentional about progress and participate actively in initiatives that resonate with their interests. In conclusion, Mr. Onimode stressed on the importance of global relevance and local impact, urging individuals to engage in activities that not only align with global standards but also contribute positively to their local communities. Today’s #AfricanProverb, “You can’t hide smoke when the house is burning”, is from the county that was formerly part of Rwanda…you guessed it – Burundi. The metaphor of a burning house and its visible smoke signifies that when issues become too large or critical, no matter how hard one tries to cover them up, they will come to light. This is all too real in the world of #business. #Financial mismanagement, bad #governance, operational failures, unethical #business practices, and failure to adapt quickly to #market trends are just few of the “smokey” practices you cannot hide or cover up for too long. These shortcomings will eventually be exposed and in most cases, the fallout will be either irreversible or cost twice as much to gain back your #clients, #customers, and the public’s trust. It is, therefore, important that as a business leader, you keep a clean house, upholding proactive problem-solving, transparency, and #ethical business practices. The UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce is the leading private sector organisation proffering #trade and commerce support for UK/Ghana businesses. From bailiffs and closed businesses to an #InclusiveTaxPaymentPlan and #IncreasedGovernmentRevenue, our USAID Zambia Business Enabling Project (BEP), has transformed district-level business environments. We’ve achieved this by facilitating private-public dialogue (PPD) to close communication and collaboration gaps and put local leaders at the forefront of policy reform. Our latest blog uncovers the reasons behind the communication and compliance barriers businesses face with taxation at national and local levels in #Zambia. It also highlights how USAID’s BEP project is addressing these challenges. For example, PPD platforms offer opportunities to explain, listen, and co-create solutions to the problems faced by both parties. This leads to a more conducive business environment that benefits both the #PublicSectors and #PrivateSectors.
