This article is insightful as it highlights the rapid changes in the job market as a result of technology and economic shifts. It emphasizes the need for new skills in South Africa which will help reduce the graduate unemployment and improve core skills like communication and digital literacy which are key to preparing for future jobs and economic growth in this country.

Youth unemployment varies enormously around the world – from historic lows in parts of Europe, to historic highs in parts of Africa. Planning for employment of young people into the future requires us to think more about skills rather than jobs. This was the topic of conversation last week at the Global Labor Market Conference in Saudi Arabia, attended by over 5000 professionals from around the world. A very diverse panel comprising Steven Chua, PhD; Seamus McGuinness; Jawad Khan; Hon. Alpha Timbo and moderated by Charlotte Kan highlighted the challenges and opportunities we have as we transition to a world of work defined by skills rather than jobs. For me, in the future, work will combine skills and technology to amplify the capacity of people. It will likely require organizations to reshape and redefine their structures to enable skills-based careers. Unfortunately, Mercer’s 2023 Skills Snapshot Survey Report, drawing on over 1,400 leaders across 60 countries indicates that while 72% of companies are using skills to support employee career development only 22% have actually incorporated skills into their work design. Stories of system change in action: Across Africa, 10 million people enter the work force EACH YEAR. Where are the jobs going to come from? This is one of the big systemic challenges facing the Continent. The Jobtech Alliance is part of a movement stimulating a tech revolution in job creation. As an Alliance they are working to change incentives, enable better collaboration, create new stories, harness collective intelligence- basically change the system- that will enable tech to play a role in creating more and better quality jobs. Taliban’s attacks on Afghanistan left many educated young professionals jobless or forced to take on menial work. G-Tribe Cool Gang, a group of employees from Genashtim involved in sustainability projects, upon hearing the plight of these highly qualified yet unemployed professionals in Afghanistan, proposed to run a training program to connect them to the global job market through remote work. The program selected seven candidates (one refugee and six young Afghan professionals) to enroll in EDX courses focused on enhancing their skills to improve their chances of being hired by international employers. Scotches of Unemployment The frustration of being unemployed despite having sufficient educational qualifications can lead to destructive behaviors, as individuals may feel compelled to accept any job that doesn't match their qualifications. However, the reality is that employment is evolving, and candidates must acquire new skills to adapt to technological advancements and globalisation. The lack of knowledge, skills, and connections has created a pandemic in the employment sector, particularly in third-world countries like South Africa. Various factors, including political landscape, economic development, and immigration, contribute to this complexity. Educational qualifications alone no longer guarantee employment. Emotional intelligence, entrepreneurship, and a strong support network are essential in navigating this challenging job market. It's crucial for all parties to work together to address this issue. Hiring managers and Human Resources practitioners must show compassion and consideration when dealing with candidates, as a lack of empathy can be suffocating. By lending a helping hand and offering support, we can ease the pain and hardship of unemployment.
