A few controversial things I believe about Navigating Human Nature in Coaching. 𝟭. 𝗢𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘀 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆. I’m not saying that coaches should not have compassion or understanding. I’m just saying maintaining an objective perspective allows you to assess situations better and guide your clients effectively. 𝗜𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗳 '𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗽𝗶𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀' as Arthur Schopenhauer put it, 𝗯𝘆 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 root causes of negative behavior exhibited by your clients t𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 them get to their desired goals and be better for it. - 𝟮) 𝗨𝗻𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀. Contrary to popular belief, limitless empathy is a myth. - It can blur the lines of professional boundaries. - Lead to emotional exhaustion for the coach. - Make it difficult to provide objective, constructive feedback. Unbridled empathy is a fast-track to losing professional effectiveness and personal balance. - 𝟯) 𝗘𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆. “Most people” do what “most people” do. Which leads to… - Homogenized coaching styles. - Lack of differentiation in the market. - Diminished value proposition to clients. Clearly, what “most people do” doesn’t always work. So, dare to be different, bring in your unique style and adjust to suit the uniqueness of your client and the problem or goal at hand. - 𝟰) 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱. 99% of the time, this approach is a mistake. Arthur Schopenhauer offers a compelling framework for gaining deeper insights into human nature without becoming ensnared in the allure of trendy methods. - Cultivate a mindset of curiosity and learning. - Practice reflective listening to truly understand your clients. - Use empathy strategically to connect without losing objectivity. - 𝟱) 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸. Pursuing accolades or high client numbers as indicators of success is misguided. Because the essence of impactful coaching lies in the transformational journeys we facilitate, not in superficial achievements. - Transformative growth in clients is more rewarding. - Deep, meaningful connections enrich both coach and client. - Authentic success is measured by the positive changes we inspire in others' lives. Focus first and always on this and the accolades and numbers will follow - 𝗟𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 people to their goals. #CoachingWisdom #UnderstandingHumanNature #TransformNegativity #personalfinance

Coaching models provide structured frameworks for guiding purposeful, goal oriented conversations. 🔵 Here's a look at four popular models: 1. GROW: Goals - Reality - Options - What’s Next The GROW model is a widely-used approach that helps individuals clarify their goals, assess their current reality, explore options, and determine the next steps. It is simple yet powerful, enabling clear and focused coaching sessions. 2. OSCAR: Outcome - Situation - Choices - Actions - Review The OSCAR model expands on the GROW model by incorporating a review step. It emphasizes defining the desired outcome, understanding the current situation, exploring choices, taking action, and reviewing the progress. This model is particularly effective for long-term coaching relationships where continuous improvement is key. 3. CLEAR: Contract - Listen - Explore - Action - Review The CLEAR model focuses on establishing a coaching contract, actively listening, exploring issues deeply, taking actionable steps, and reviewing outcomes. It is especially useful for ensuring that both the coach and the coachee are aligned and committed to the process. 4. GREAT: Goal - Reality - Explore - Action - Timing Similar to GROW, the GREAT model adds an emphasis on timing, making it effective for goal setting where deadlines are critical. This model ensures that actions are not only strategically planned but aligned with an appropriate timeline. 🔵 How are they similar? All four models are designed to provide structure to coaching conversations, helping individuals set and achieve goals. They each emphasize understanding the current situation (Reality/Situation), exploring possible actions (Options/Choices/Explore), and taking concrete steps (Action). These models also stress the importance of review and reflection, though the approach and terminology differ slightly among them. 🔵 Strategic Thinking & Coaching Strategic thinking encourages deeper questioning: How do these goals align with the bigger picture? What potential roadblocks should we anticipate? What long-term impact will these actions have? When applied strategically, models like GROW, OSCAR, CLEAR, and GREAT don’t just facilitate goal achievement—they foster a mindset of strategic thinking, adaptability, and alignment with broader organizational or personal visions. This makes the coaching process more dynamic and forward-thinking, ensuring that progress is sustainable and impactful over time. 🔵 Reminder: Coaching is not about a model. Whether you choose GROW, OSCAR, CLEAR, or GREAT, these frameworks are just reminders on how to approach a session. Great coaching is about your presence, your mindset, your ability to deeply listen, evoke awareness and help your coachee develop themselves. #coaching #leadership #leaderascoach

Accelerating Business Development | Supporting Communication Competencies | Co-Creating Intercultural Sensitivity
My first business coach Dumped me I was in shock. ****************** My first business coach dumped me. Yes, this was the exact feeling triggered when she ended one coaching session by abruptly informing me that this was our last, without any heads up, warning, or further explanation. It hit me like a ton of bricks – shock, anger, and fear surged through me one by one. First reaction – shock! Questions raced through my mind: What had I done wrong? Was I not developing fast enough? Was I a hopeless case? Second – anger! In that moment, I felt abandoned and lost, left to navigate my journey alone. Finally – fear! Who will be there for me now? To speak to, to refer to, to discuss difficult situations? That pivotal moment happened in 2005. Only a month later, I learned the simple reason for it: the budget allocated by my company was spent. Though initially traumatic, it sparked a journey of self-discovery and resilience. Now, after years of being coached and coaching myself, I've distilled three learnings that continue to shape my approach today. #1 For the Coachee – Take Ownership Take ownership of your growth journey. Be clear about the purpose of your coaching. This includes setting goals, actively participating in sessions, and implementing insights. It’s up to you to co-design your coaching-process. It is not about "fixing" you, but about fostering self-awareness. This allows for genuine growth and development. #2 For the Coach – Cultivate Trust Building trust is essential to explore challenges and opportunities openly. If your skills are only limited to raising the best questions or you simply follow best practice models or proven methodologies, you may fall short in your role of guiding an individual human being through a life-changing process. Ensure that at each stage, the relationship is infused with transparency and role-coherence. You are neither the best friend nor a ‘long arm’ for some third party to train or change an individual to become a better fit for a running system. #3 For the Intermediator – Provide Support In the corporate world, contracting often is done by an intermediator like HR or a team leader. Ensure that alignment and transparency are created throughout the complete coaching journey. Often intermediators shy away from getting involved because they respect the privacy of a coaching relationship. That is a mandatory non-negotiable, but staying out of the process entirely and hoping for a miracle to happen is not effective either. If you have an active role in the contracting, you also have the responsibility to provide support for both – the coachee and the coach – to ensure their work contributes to the overall organization's objectives. ****************** Have you ever reflected on your 'first' coaching experience and want to share your learnings? Or perhaps you're about to embark on a coaching journey for the first time and seeking guidance on how to make it most beneficial. Feel free to reach out.

Driven by the Purpose to " Help successful people shine better and brighter", Story Telling ; Positive Intelligence
Do you know that most executive and leadership coaches offer a pro-bono, no obligation session ? As they say “we are what we repeatedly do”. It is imperative for those who seek progress and growth to build awareness / identify new habits that need to be built and habits that may be limiting them to change and grow/progress. Changing our habits of thinking ( before actions) can be challenging due to various factors that come in the way. Some common barriers that I have noticed / observed include Comfort Zone, Fear of Failure, Negative Self-Talk, Lack of Awareness & Social and Cultural Influences. In my more than a decade experience as a coach, I have met and coached many professionals who walk in to a coaching session as quite confident or just plain cynical – what can coaching do to our successful careers, I have been there, done it. Most often at end of the session , they reflect and acknowledge the aha / light bulb moments experienced. The session helps them discover their blind spots and biases and a realisation that there is vast untapped potential in them to “ be more” and “ do more”. Most of the certified coaches (Read #ICF) offer a complimentary, no obligation session for people to understand and experience coaching. #Coaching & Coaches help / facilitate developing strategies such as setting clear goals, cultivating self-awareness, seeking support from others, and practicing self-compassion that can help professionals / leaders overcome obstacles and successfully change their habits of thinking leading to new actions and chosen area of growth and progress. I have spoken to more than 100 coaches in last 6 months. 64% coaches have said that they do offer the pro-bono/ non obligatory session. Now the surprising fact. Less than 7% people take up the offer of a pro-bono session. I wonder why ? Is it that people think it is a stigma to work with coach – IT IS NOT, Growth oriented & Successful people work with coaches to shine themselves ! Do people feel self sufficient to achieve the goals in their life and not need help – MOST PEOPLE NEED HELP. Even Bill gates’ speaks about working with a coach.! Is it too costly – IT IS NOT A COST BUT AN INVESTMENT that goes a long way in achieving your DREAMS & Goals ! Please do share your inputs and insights on what may be the reason for people to hold themselves back from an opportunity to shine themselves? Sr Manager, Commercial Capability, B.Braun | Experienced L&D Professional | Consultant | Career Coach | Story Teller |
🌟Exploring the Depths of #Coaching with Sridhar Laxman When I wanted to know more about Sridhar Laxman before listening to him at coaching.com, I came across this gem of a talk on YouTube. Watch the talk here - https://lnkd.in/dqssBtxY This talk was a fascinating exploration of the coaching process and the intricate balance required to handle diverse personalities and organizational goals. 🌟Three things stood out for me: 1. Fear and clarity cannot coexist; increasing clarity usually reduces fear. Coaches help clients gain clarity to overcome fears and make better decisions. 2. Understanding and accepting polarities – being an introvert and extrovert in different situations – is crucial in coaching. 3. Coaches must continuously invest in their development, addressing internal battles and maintaining a state of calm and presence. This self-awareness and growth are essential for effectively helping clients. Additional Insights from the Talk 🌟Balancing Individuality and Commonalities: He emphasizes the unique traits every individual brings, whether in one-on-one coaching or group settings. He points out the common threads, such as aspirations, fears, and self-doubts, that all individuals share regardless of their backgrounds. 🌟Aligning Stakeholders in Coaching: Effective coaching begins with alignment among stakeholders: the organization, the manager, the client & the coach. If there is resistance or discomfort, the process doesn't start until everyone is on the same page regarding the goals. 🌟Addressing Resistance to Change: He notes that resistance to change is natural and common. The coaching process involves understanding this resistance, bringing awareness to it, & helping individuals make informed choices. 🌟Storytelling in Coaching: Storytelling is a powerful tool in coaching, but it's primarily the clients who share their stories. Creating a safe, non-judgmental space by Coaches allows clients to open up and share their experiences, which can be incredibly insightful. 🌟Being in the Moment: He emphasizes the importance of being present and focusing on the current moment. This helps in understanding the client's current state and addressing their immediate needs effectively. 🌟The Coach’s Journey: While he didn’t delve deeply into his personal journey in the provided excerpt, he acknowledges the importance of coaches being aware of their own stories and continuously learning from them. Sridhar Laxman's talk is a masterclass in understanding the nuances of coaching, making it a must-watch for anyone in the field. #Coaching #PersonalDevelopment #Leadership #SelfImprovement #ProfessionalGrowth #ExecutiveCoaching #Mentorship #Insights #ClarityOverFear #ContinuousLearning

Understanding the Differences Between Coaching and Consulting Coaching and consulting are two unique and complementary approaches to assisting individuals and organizations in reaching their goals. These are the primary distinctions: Emphasis: Coaching concentrates on empowering individuals or teams to discover their own solutions and develop their own skills. The aim is to enhance personal and/or professional growth, improve performance, and unlock your potential as a leader, entrepreneur, and visionary. Whereas Consulting focuses on providing expert advice, knowledge, and solutions to specific problems or challenges. Said another way, consultants give you the answers (the what and the how) and coaches help you discover your why and find your own what and how which creates durable growth and success. The Role: The coach acts as a facilitator and guide, helping clients explore their goals, values, and beliefs, and supporting them in finding their own solutions. The coach does not provide direct solutions or advice but helps clients tap into their own resources. On the other hand, the consultant takes a more active role, providing expert advice, analysis, and recommendations based on their specialized knowledge and experience. Approach: Coaching utilizes a collaborative and client-centered approach. Coaches employ active listening, powerful questioning, and various techniques to help clients gain clarity, set goals, and create action plans while Consulting involves a more directive approach. Consultants are engaged to solve a particular problem or achieve a specific outcome within a defined timeframe. Time Horizon: Coaching takes a more long-term approach which aims to facilitate lasting change and growth for you, the person. The coaching process also takes place within a defined timeframe and can be extended at your discretion, allowing you to work progressively towards your goals. In contrast, consulting engagements are typically shorter in duration, with a clear start and end point. Consultants are engaged to address a specific business challenge or opportunity. Their goal is to deliver precise, actionable recommendations or to implement a solution within a designated time frame. So, while coaching focuses on the client's long-term development as a more effective person, consulting is more oriented towards achieving short-term, measurable outcomes for the organization. Ultimately, choosing between coaching and consulting should depend on your unique circumstances and needs. In some cases, a blend of both approaches may provide the most effective and comprehensive support. The key is to thoroughly evaluate the specific requirements and then select the most appropriate approach (or combination of approaches) to achieve your desired results. We are both coach and consultant hence we deliver a completely bespoke, comprehensive solution for you. #BusinessCoaching #Consulting #Coaching #EmpoweredDentist #Motivation #Careers #LifeCoach
