Looking back on Atos Back in Nov 23 I had the honour to present the Barney Gibbens Memorial Lecture for the WCIT. Indeed you can still watch it on YouTube - see link below.  Barney was an early UK IT pioneer forming CAP Group in 1962. When I wrote the first Holway Report in 1988, CAP Group was the 7th largest supplier of IT Services to the UK market. However in 1988 it ‘merged’ with the French Group Sema Metra. The resulting Sema Group was a FTSE100 company in 1999/2000 but was acquired by Schumberger in 2001. Then SchlumbergerSema was acquired by ATOS Origin in 2004. Indeed, CAP was not the only UK acquisition for ATOS. In 2002 they had acquired KPMG Consulting’s UK activities. In my lecture, I noted that CAP still ‘lived on’ in ATOS – in 2023 the 10th largest supplier of IT Services to the UK market and the 5th largest supplier in Europe. When I came to the section of my speech on ‘Acquisition Indigestion’ I reminisced on how ATOS Origin’s CEO at the time Bernard Bourigeaud (he stepped down in 2007) would always chastise me when I said I didn’t know of any large acquisition which had ever worked for the buyer. I defined ‘large’ as being >50% of the purchaser. Bernard believed that the 1997 ATOS Origin merger was an exception. I'll give him 'the benefit of the doubt'! I remarked in my speech that I couldn’t understand how the French could build two ‘Top Ten’ IT Services companies (the other being Capgemini). Both by the acquisition of other Top Ten UK suppliers. Why couldn’t it have been the other way around? All these memories came flooding back as I was reading of Atos’ current ‘difficulties’ in Georgina O'Toole O’Toole’s series of posts on TechMarketView’s Hotview culminating today on their FY23 results. It is pretty amazing that a group with revenues in 2023 of Euro10.6 billion has a market value today of a mere Euro 197m. https://lnkd.in/e5vuzTSf
