At the 2024 World AgriFood Innovation Conference (WAFI), Dr. Shijie Ding, Co-founder and CEO of Joes Future Food, joined a panel at the forum on "Market Expansion and Policy Regulation: Consumer Demand Driving the Future of the Alternative Protein Industry."
Dr. Shijie Ding highlighted the critical role of technological innovation in the new protein space, particularly in cultivated meat. He explained how consumer demand and market trends are key drivers of both technological advancements and production innovation. This creates a positive feedback loop where market shifts guide R&D, and breakthroughs in technology further meet consumer needs, increasing acceptance of these new products.

Today was day 1 of the kick-off meeting for the newly funded, #BBSRC#transdisciplinary#AMR network in AgriFood #AMAST. Superbly coordinated by Quadram Institute amongst others. It is one of 8 networks of amazing people wanting to not just tackle drug resistant infections and support the role the AgriFood sector plays, but do so collaboratively and with those most effected. So everyone!
Some take aways already...🌱 Researchers need to and want to experience first hand the challenges facing the food & farming sector. A real opportunity to get researchers on farm, in factories and in the field! Let's pool our knowledge.
🌱Antimicrobial use has significantly dropped and stays low in the food producing sector in the UK but its not the same globally and we operate in a global food system. We have now reached a "glass floor and need to think about how we break through it" (@LauraHigham) How can we transcend borders more effectively and inclusively?
🌱All well and good having a group of researchers and industry deciding priority areas, but we need to be bold and include those with no voice but on AMR frontline. Even if its hard, slow and we get kicked back.
🌱The AMR and agrifood community face some uncomfortable conversations about the future of how we produce food. We should embrace the discomfort. Innovation & transformation happens when we dive out of our comfort zone. (in my humble opinio!)

A 45-year-old company, Prompt DairyTech—incidentally also the sponsor of the event—being awarded the Best Startup Award feels rather ironic.
It’s like Jio receiving a startup award at an event sponsored by Reliance Industries! 😄
Adding to the irony, this company has allegedly been stealing technology developed by new startups, including MBscan, while discouraging innovators who invest significant time and resources in R&D to create new value for the dairy sector.
Our dairy leaders tirelessly work in challenging conditions—be it rain or sun—to ensure the quality of milk. Yet, they are compelled to rely on outdated tools due to a lack of support for genuine innovation, stifled by a few companies who think they 'rule' the industry.
I urge industry leaders and associations to take a stand in protecting innovation and fostering a supportive ecosystem that encourages the brightest talents to drive progress in the dairy sector.
By nurturing genuine innovators, we can ensure a future where we no longer have to turn to the West to solve Indian problems achieving true #AtmaNirbhar self-reliance.
