Ask yourself, are you really working on the great challenges of today? With this question the team of zero360 GmbH and UN Global Compact Netzwerk Deutschland initiated the first meet-up of the SDG Innovation Accelerator Program in Berlin this morning. After an insightful day of brainstorming, learning and networking with sustainability-interested professionals from different industries the Proske team around Janina G., Katarzyna Matuszczak and myself, has deep-dived into the topic sustainable development in the event industry and chosen a major challenge that we’ll tackle over the course of the program: The responsible production of event materials. From planning over production, life cycle extension and end-of-life management of event materials there are many areas where we see an immense environmental impact. Every event includes different event materials, produced by different suppliers and designed for single-use, aligned with the theme of the event, which often eliminates the chances for an extended life cycle. An impactful solution that can be applied to all our in-person events is required. Will we find a solution for this key challenge of the event industry and lead the way to waste-free events? The 63rd Dornbirn-GFC2024 has come to a close after three insightful days. Industry leaders shared their perspectives on next-gen materials and the manufacturing challenges we face, and I deeply respect their insights! Academic institutions and startups collaborated to advance scale-up journeys (acknowledging the many challenges ahead). The master session on elastane/ Lycra’s impact on textile recycling also provided valuable insights for further reflection. Most importantly, the conference was rich with networking opportunities. A huge thank you to all the new and familiar faces with whom we spent quality time reflecting on challenges and exploring collaboration opportunities. In every industry, competition is an unspoken reality. The current global landscape, particularly in the textile industry, faces tensions from geopolitical strains, trade wars, and national rivalries. In such a complex environment, finding common ground and building trust can be difficult. However, events like this remind us that collaboration and mutual understanding are essential. The power of collaboration is key to lifting one another toward a sustainable future. Thanks again to all the contributors who made Dornbirn-GFC so impactful. It is difficult to wrap up the last days in Bilbao at the Creativity World Forum 2024, where I had the chance to be invited by the Eusko Jaurlaritza - Gobierno Vasco and the BDCC Basque District of Culture and Creativity to facilitate a Global challenge dealing with new business models for CCIs and cross-fertilisation opportunities with traditional industries. 🗣️The challenge brought together over 100 stakeholders from government, industry, academia and civil society to discuss and debate the obstacles to innovation and cross-fertilisation among industries. This was followed by proposing pathways for change and presenting evidence to support these proposals. ✅ it turned out that as we continue to gravitate towards an increasingly technological and profit-oriented society, we often overlook the importance of knowledge valorisation and forging and fostering healthy collaborations with other industries to address challenges like climate change and social justice. Culture is indeed a significant factor at the center of industry and innovation, acting as both a driver and a reflection of the developments within various sectors and a vital channel through which citizens can comprehend and derive benefits from R&I. A prime example is the newly HE project InteractionSeeds funded by the European Commission which strives to connect 🔬 research and the 🎭 arts to bring 🧠 science closer to citizens and enhance the value of knowledge, making it more accessible and enriching for all. As I look ahead, the insights gained from the Creativity World Forum 2024 underscore the vital need for continued dialogue and action and a reevaluation of our our values when innovating, I am genuinely curious and excited to see how these initiatives will unfold and change the innovation landscape in our regions.
